First, the ability to shapeshift is the ability to be unknown. Aside from Werewolf who are often but not always limited to a singular form which progresses as their lycanthropy weakens or strengthens. Shapeshifters can, with attunement and effort have multiple forms meaning they have the ability to conceal their identity. The ability to shapeshift is thus an ability to conceal and the advertisement of such is not always to the shifters benefit. The second reason is simply that advertisement of powers within the supernatural community is sometimes frowned upon since information and knowledge are power and the more well defined an individuals capabilities the easier it is to act against them.” taking a breath he begins to write SHAPESHIFTING on the top of the board and then branches it to NATURAL and MAGICAL and underneath NATURAL he writes LYCANTHROPY. “Now I have said Natural and Magical, can anyone think of a form of shapeshifting that like Lycanthropy is a ‘natural occurence’ and not something which manifests or attained via training?”

Alhambra keeps her hand down when Matias asks about shapeshifting ability, instead starting to take down notes as the class gets underway.

Derek gingerly raises his hand. “Depending on how one defines ‘shapeshifting’, I suppose metamorphosis – which a wide variety of species undergo – might be classified as such…? Though they tend to be more permanent and non-reversible.” He cups his chin, seeming to contemplate that for a moment.

Kai shoves his hand up into the air, “Mermaids and merman!” he ejaculates at the chance to be the first to answer the professor’s question, his hazel eyes bright with excitement, a grin on his face.

Kaelyn lowers her hand as the class begins proper, eyes watching the chalk move until it finally spells out ‘lycanthropy’. She stares at the word wordlessly before looking around the room for the answer- only to be caught of guard by the energetic being beside her.

Matias points at Derek and says, “Incorrect.” and then nods at Kai and says, “Points for Ashford. Merfolk are a form of shapeshifting. Although their form is hybrid it is something which is ‘racial’ in origin and often shocking to the person who goes to bath and ends up with a flipper.” underneath Lycanthropy MERFOLK is written. With that he turns and asks, “Now controversy… Some but not all Fae have an option to shapeshift. Formally known as ‘Fae Knights’ they take advantage of the mercurial nature of Fae auras to change the physical form. This can be, but is not always innate and instinctive. Is it NATURAL meaning not requiring training or is it MAGICAL in the sense that it is gained from some form of effort?”

From his position atop a chair, Noel looks over those gathered, perhaps used to receiving silence in response to his offers. But he is resilient, about to make his announcement again before he notes that Matias has entered the classroom. Now he’s on his soap box, hovering high above the rest of the class despite barely making the cut of five feet tall, and quickly he grins in the other teacher’s direction, looking both relieved and then embarrassed in turn. “Tres magnifique, you are well. I will just… Get down from this chair,” he explains, wobbling slightly and then carefully climbing his way down with his purse dogs dangling from his elbow.

Down at last he slips his short clad rear back onto his seat, scooting it forward quietly and feigning the part of student despite being a teacher himself, quietly listening in to the class and delicately draping his right leg over his left and bobbing his ankle idly. He keeps quiet now, falling into sweet silence and instead letting his presence, and his aroma, speak for him, understated but also potent in the same breath, sweet and seductive and alluring.

Kaelyn after a moment raises her hand, “Can it be both? Just because one person can do it without thought doesn’t take away from those you trained and visa versa.”

Nemi raises a hand. “Natural would be the merfolk shifting I believe- But the ‘Fae Knights’ Imply training was since you said they take advantage of the mercurial nature- Not already have the ability to. So I’d said magical! Something that’d come from training. And just because one can do it without thought now does not mean they were always able too.”

Celestine finally looks up from her phone, having spent the past five minutes glancing up at each individual in the room before jotting down notes with her keyboard. She stows it in her purse without comment, bringing trembling hands to curl around her cane.

Nemi lowers her hands after a few moments as she stops to write down a few more notes in her notebook.

Matias looks out over the sea of faces, lingering here or there for a time before turning around and putting FAE under MAGICAL. “Perhaps notetaking is more important to the class than participation. Understandable the ability to change form is one of the most desirable powers in the world. Thank you Animorphs.” he references a book from the 90s… concerning. “Fae are in fact magical and not natural because our rule thus far for natural has been the entire group and always without training. The innate or non-training effort in which -some- can do is merely a level of talent. Some are talented and things come naturally but that does not change the source which is a skill. That being said who else may fall under magical forms of shapeshifting?”

Alhambra lifts her hand, and after a moment calls out to Matias, “Those who practice natural forms of magic?”

Nemi hums softly. Shrugging after a moment as her mind draws a blank.

“I mean yeah like any arcanist could, for sure, there’s also like… non-arcanist, non-werewolf, non-fae knights who can but I have to be honest, I don’t know how that works,” Kai admits as he drops his hand from the air and leans against Sophie lightly.

Kai shoots his hand up into the air, “Wait, not any arcanist. But some arcanists,” he’s quick to ammend and again drops his hand from the air.

“If we assume that shapeshifting is a result of people meddling and hijacking thiings, all of it is effectively magical; a distinction seems necessarily contrived.” Derek supposes with a puff of air from his nose. “People imitating nature.” he mumbles, scribbling at his phone screen with furrowed brows.

Justine shifts in her seat, eyes closing and herself looking about to nod off. Then she takes another gulp from the can of energy drink.

Kaelyn tilts her head at the sound with a little frown.

Celestine nods sagely to herself, leaning over her pocketbook to scribble down a frantic scrawl of notes.

Already by the door, Annabelle shifts through the door and nudges Jenny. “Hereyago.”

“Also those who have artifacts that allows them to transform,” Jasper speaks, glancing up at the sound of howling with a small frown

Derek cups his hand his ear as if listening to something with a furrow of his brows. “…Something’s nearby.” he mumbles.

Nemi nods softly in agreement as she looks and nods a bit.

Jenny steps in looking like a zombie, carrying a whole pizza box in hand. As she seeks a seat in the back most corner.

Celestine nods sagely to herself, leaning over her pocketbook to scribble down a frantic scrawl of notes.

Noel scoots his chair closer to Derek’s own until the two are nearly touching, but not quite, and continues to sit in his polite, crosslegged manner, keeping his eyes on Matias as he lectures the class. Politely quiet he reaches his hand into his purse, delicately careessing through the cottony fur of a pastel pink Pomeranian, who had poked its head out to observe.

Sophie crosses her legs at the knee and listens intently, eyes darting around the room to check on the class before returning to her notes.

“Correct. Some but not all Arcanists can shapeshift. There are also ‘primal’ shifters these are people who essentially attune to animal forms and are able to shapeshift into them. This would be akin to the Native American Spirit Animal in a sense.” Matias begins to write Arcanists (SOME) / PRIMAL / FAE KNIGHT / RELIC OR ARTIFACT and now turns back to the class. “I will be speaking now on Arcanist shapeshifting as I am a Natural Arcanist, a Druid, or as some books call us Harmonic Ritualists.” there is a placement of the chalk back on the table and a removal of his low-set spectacles to place beside it, he begins to remove his wristwatch the implication perhaps that he is stripping in the front of the class! “Now as I noted magical forms of shapeshifting are learned even natural talents have to practice. The selection of an animal can be conscious or subconscious but often come from a desire to be or a familiarity of spirit in the metaphysical sense. As the majority of you cannot shapeshift or do not admit to it. I will tell you now that shapeshifting means sharing a mind with an animal instinct. Werewolves struggle with this on the full moon, but magical shapeshifters can also be subsumed by their animal forms. This most commonly happens after prolonged time in a form especially after sleeping when your own mind has yet to clear or focus.”

Derek’s eyes drift curiously over to Noel as he scoots his chair closer, brows lifting as the sound of his stylus drifting against his phone screen quietly continues, his attention returning briefly to the lecture as he observes quietly, before his eyes drift over to Noel’s little Pomeranian, which gets a slight upcurl of his lips in a brief smile.

Nemi nods softly to Matias as she listens, jotting clear notes down on the various forms of capable shapeshifters, as the information is fed of course. She hums a bit, nodding a bit more as she decides she now remains satisfied with what she’s written and turns her attention back to the Professor.

Jasper slowly nods at Matias as he watches, leaning back against his seat while he glances at the chalkboard.

Though there is no verbal outburst, any attentive to Noel could see his lower lip pulled between his teeth at Matias starts to undress, amusement present in his devilish eyes, as though challengign the man to full strip here and now. Even still, he continues to gently pet at that Pomeranian, scratching behind its ears and rubbing under its chin until a second pops out of the bag excitedly, this one powder blue to oppose the pastel pink, both poofy little balls of living cotton candy.

Pulling one leg underneath her with a hiss, Kaelyn leans back a little. A little nod was given at the mention of sleep, fingers moving as if to tug at the sleeves of the flannel she wasn’t wearing.

After removing everything except his primary attire Matias runs a hand through his hair and a smoke begins to come off his skin. Scent of fermented white sugar and the heady some say stinking aroma of cigar smoke becomes acute for those near the front of the class as the fog thickens around the professor who continues to speak. “There are two forms of shapeshifting. The physical where you hear bones break and it is very viscreal. The magical form is known as aurashifting and we do not lose our clothing although shapeshifting back with little bits on you can be painful depending on what position your hands are in.” and with that he is enveloped in the smoke and steps back to sit on the large desk and in his place there is…

Matias(feline catus) is perched atop the desk as the smoke quickly dissipates and looks out over the class with a *meow*

Sophie blinks at the cat and then says to the room, “Nobody! is petting the Professor!”

Matias(feline catus) lifts up his paw with claws out and does a bat bat bat at the air as if daring someone to brave this feline menace.

Alhambra grins at Sophie’s comment to the room, then turning her attention towards where the professor was, and now Matias(feline catus) is.

Derek gazes leerily at Sophie, green eyes drifting to Matias(feline catus). “Why not?” he supposes with a flit of his brows.

Sophie squints her eyes at Derek, “Because it’s inappropriate.”

“Why?” Derek states bluntly to Sophie.

“Umm, okay,” Jasper murmurs, his amber gaze falling upon Matias(feline catus). “Didn’t know the professor can change into something like that.”

“He looks like he could claw someone up real good, if they tried petting him, and he didn’t want to be.” Alhambra says with a giggle.

Sophie nods at Alhambra’s comment.

Matias(feline catus) flicks its long and bushy tail while moving from a perched seated position to walking along the edge with perfect feline balance and then doing a circle before smoke begins to come off its bushy fur. For a cat it is very large, unnaturally so not many eleven pound kitties that are chubby running around and with the floofy fur its almost like a fox or a smaller sized dog. With the smoke continuing to exude it jumps down in the midst of it and…

Kaelyn chuckles softly as someone bats at the air, her eyes dancing a little bit at the antics of it. “It all depends on what allowed. You can pet any cat, but you might pay for it. Have you felt their claws?”

Kaelyn chuckles softly as the professor cat bats at the air, her eyes dancing a little bit at the antics of it. “It all depends on what allowed. You can pet any cat, but you might pay for it. Have you felt their claws?”

“Broooo you were Pixel all along?” Kai asks Matias when he shifts into the cat and then back out of it, he shakes his head and grins, “That’s fucking hilarious…” he laughs a bit and slouches down a bit more in his seat.

Matias rolls his wrist and makes a little wavy gesture at the quickly dissipating smoke. “Generally petting shapeshifters who you know are people is considered rude. Especially when truly powerful shapeshifters and arcanists can still mance while in an animal form. Now I have explained the basics of shapeshifting. Normally if I had been on time we would end here. I will extend the class 30 minutes due to my tardiness. Are there questions!”

“I still don’t get how non-arcanists are able to attune like Native Americans or whatever you said. How do they do that?” Kai asks Matias.

“Generally petting any animal you don’t know is a bit risky.” Alhambra remarks with a chuckle before asking Matias, “How much of… yourself I guess, do you keep when you’re in cat form?”

“Good question Mister Ashford. Apparently someone came out of finals with a new attitude.” Matias remarks or maybe it was a magical book re-writing his brain… Who knows! “We will address Lopez first. You have full mental facilities while shifted. Depending on your arcane skill you can even mance or use telepathy or other psionic abilities. Generally speaking any shapeshifted animal can be assumed to be in complete control of itself the majority of the time. The animal instincts are like… a very strong desire. As a cat, I may see a quick moving thing like a bird or someone flicking a feather around on a string and I will have the desire to watch it but I can override that desire.” and then he begins to put back on his wrist watch and his glasses. “Attunement… So this is different for different people. I can only personally speak to arcanist attunement which is almost like selecting your familiar summon. Only it is a form you can attune too. With aura shifting I personally memorized an arcane formula which I focus on during the shifting which allows me to retain my clothing. Now from a purely academic standpoint attuning to an animal form for primal and fae shifters is like any other supernatural ability. Either you are taught a methodology which works and you rely on or you naturally come to it with manifestation. Often attunement means mentally linking your own attribtues to attributes of the animal. Very rarely do people turn into animals which they have no personality or physical similarity too. Other questions?”

“When it comes to attunement, what is the difference between being done by a mancer or primal shifter and being done as a werewolf?” Jasper wonders of Matias.

“I know werewolves while transformed can breed with each other. But are werewolves and shapeshifters’ DNA still human and can they breed with humans or other supernaturals while shifted. Breed in the sense of creating a pregnancy, I know they could fuck if their proportions are correct. Or like, to take the grossness out of it, could a werewolf’s semen be harvested and used for in vitro fertilization of a human woman or does that not work? I dunno why I care I’m just kinda curious. Not a furry!” Kai calls out while his hand is raised.

“Werewolf attunement and acceptance of their forms tend to unlock further powers and even control of their shifting.” Matias explains to Jasper while continuing on in his baritone of a voice. “Primal, Fae, and Arcanist attunement is more gaining access to the form. It is less about control and more about strengthening the form itself and being able to turn into it. Essentially a werewolf can and will turn into a wolf no matter what. The wolf impacts the human form naturally via the lycanthropy curse. Whereas with other forms of shapeshifters we have to create that metaphysical link. It is actually very common that when a magical shapeshifter gains a new form you may see affectations in their human form being. Like small ticks, habits, or behaviours.” and then Kai speaks. “You can ask the Hand doctors they have experimented with this. To my knowledge the answer is yes and the result is the very very rare natural born werewolf is my understanding.”

Nemi just slooooowly turns her head to look over at Kai as if she was fully suspicious even when he said that very last part. Though she still jots down more notes after a moment.

Trying to save the mood, Annabelle wonders aloud. “So um. Werewolf puppy?”

Derek stares at Kai with his mouth slightly agape, his eyes looking tired and not even really surprised, letting out an amused little scoffing sound, expression returning to relative neutrality after Matias’s answer as he sits back in his seat, remaining quiet, his hands stilled – he’s not bothering with notes at this point, or so it seems.

“That’s kinda badass. Test tube werewolves,” Kai grins aside at Sophie and then at Kaelyn and back to Matias and drops his hands into his hoodie pocket, he hmms a bit and throws his hand up again, “Professor! Peoplee, especially vampires, keep calling Lycanthropy a disease, but you juse called it a curse and so do others sometimes. So like, which is it?” he asks.

Sophie pats Kai’s leg and snickers.

“I see,” Jasper replies with a nod of his head before he looks at Kai. “Like Alphonse was born a werewolf.”

“Technically Lycanthropy is a fleshforming virus which self propagates via injuries that infect others. The curse is used because it is magical in nature as a fleshforming thing and some call it a disease because of the passing through bites and wounds. It is a magical virus.” Matias confirms to Kai

“Okay cool, so like… kinda like a virus… curse? Both?” Kai asks Matias, tilting his head at the man.

“It is a Fleshforming Virus or magical virus take your pick on terminology but that is the technical application.” Matias confirms

“Notably so is vampirism but they do not like the association.” Matias adds belatedly

“We have nine minutes, any final questions?” Matias looks across the room.

“Is the subject of vampirism and lycanthropy abled to be treated, through medication or arcane to reduce the symptoms, or are the predatory behaviors more often treated through therapeutic means.” Annabelle asks from the back, rummaging through her bag.

Nemi looks over to Kai and sighs softly. “What the professor said- curse is more of an- intent or basic category the action of the magic, still magical, would fall under. But if I remember the history lessons right theres no exact records on this stuff…” She then turns to Matias. “Do you know anyone open to possibly teaching Natural magic?” She poses.

“Vampirism and Lycanthropy are the permanent change of the physical and spiritual form of the victim via fleshforming linked to the transformation. They cannot be cured except by fleshforming.” Matias says with a finality and bluntness to the assessment. “The predatory instincts of both states can be controlled as shown by the Order, however there are debates whether that is merely temporary or a longterm solution.” and then to Nemi, “I would be open to doing lessons however normally in Arcane circles students find a singular master or tradition to Apprentice too. Since Winderemere is a University I provide lessons without that relationship. In addition if anyone would like to reach out for private lessons on shapeshifting let me know and we can work on your schedule. And with that class is dismissed.”

Date: 2025-08-07 20:28 (Matias’s Shapeshifting Nature & Magic [Windermere]) [Thu Aug 7 2025] A Musty Basement Seminar Room/spanThe Plymouth Seminar Room occupies a windowless corner of the basement, its low ceiling supported by exposed pipes that occasionally emit soft clicking sounds as they expand and…

[133

post-23817","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-calendarlog
["GET
