31The thrift shop is a quiet space with a faint, mingled scent of old fabric and faint perfume. Metal ra55cks, packed tightly with a variety of clothes, line the aisles. Faded denim jackets hang beside brightl54y patterned dresses, and sensible jumpers mingle with sequined tops. Near the counter, glass display ca53ses hold an assortment of cheap jewellery; tarnished silver earrings, beaded necklaces, and rings with52 dull or missing stones lie scattered within. Overhead, simple wooden racks display an array of hats, r51anging from wide-brimmed sunhats to knitted beanies, some looking nearly new, others clearly well-worn.

It is about 65/i>/span18C) degrees. The mist is heaviest At Carnation and Blackstone/span>/span(Your target and their allies encounter someone who’s been supernaturally influenced into committing a crime for a supernatural. It is up to them to stop the crime and then maybe also try to find the true perpetrator, maybe freeing the thrall from their control in the process.

“Professor Cain say um… he also does religious studies. And drink lots of alcohol.” Eloa dutifully reports to Matias even as a customer comes in! The man looks a bit shifty though, their eyes glazed over as they run their hands over the rack and then start to take items and shove them into his pants. “Hey! Excuse me sir!” Eloa calls out, frowning as she looks to Matias for help.

Matias is standing a short distance from the entrance so when a new customer comes in there is the normal glance back to note them and then his attention returns to Eloa while she relays impressions of a new Windermere faculty member. “Good to know.” and when Eloa calls out in protest the Professor looks towards the man shoving things in his pants with a frown. “This is thrift store not a Goodwill. Is not for taking sir, put back.” he instructs the man with a chiding brazilian accented voice.

The man looks up at Matias and something is /wrong/. His eyes are fully dilated. His skin is shiny with sweat. He seems to hear Matias but his movements to look up at Matias are very slow.. although his hands shake like he’s had a few lines of coke. “Must… take… items back..” The man speaks in a croaky voice, the words sounding forced as he shoves another shirt down his pants.

Matias approaches the sweat sheened man still taking things to shove down his pants and reaches out to try and catch his shoulder. “These are not yours, why do you need to take?” he asks in a polite but hardly worried voice, his slate-grey eyes searching the man’s face. “What is your name?”

The man starts to shake as he looks up at Matias, “Need take back.. Need.. carry much as possible..” He looks around and finds a tote bag off on the other side of the store and starts across it, dragging down a rack of clothes with him that tangles him up. “Need trade.. more Happy..” The man whose fallen down starts to call out. Dressed in only a T-shirt and baggy jeans, the man starts to pull himself across the carpet- probably getting some nice carpet burns.

“Eloa call police.” Eloa tells Matias from the back counter, picking up the phone, “Ola? Is 911? Is need report crime. What? Is going to take 3 hours to get come?? But man is here now?”

As the man goes off the deep end and Eloa phones the police Matias simply puts a shoe on the man’s back pressing some of his bodyweight down on the man to pin him to the ground. He is not supernaturally strong but when he says, “You need to stop resisting and calm down.” the psychic tendrils of persuasion reach out from the resonating baritone of a voice into the man’s mind attempting to take root.

Even without the psychic tendrils, the man on the ground suddenly seems much more relaxed and calm. He starts to sing to himself as he rocks back and forth on the ground, “Cannnn you feeelllll the loveee tonightttt.” The man sings in a very offkey tune while lying on the ground crushed under Matias’s foot.

Matias furrows his brow and looks from the singing man to Eloa and asks, “Is this first time someone come in taking stuff while high?”

“No he is no dead. No Eloa no shoot him, But you need come pick him up. He no seem right. What is now four hours? What is haven police doing?” Eloa hangs up the phone with a grumble as she makes her way over carefully, standing with Matias between her man and herself. “Is another one of those people? Is lots of people in hospital recently do things. Seem very suggestible. But they no remember when they come down from high.” She shakes her head, “Usually people no think anything here worth money.”

“If police no come, maybe call hospital ambulance. Can hand him off to them, come down off drugs?” Matias suggests with his foot still pinning the rocking and crooning man, the professor not even sparing him a look at this point just some impotent nobody stoned out of their minds.

“Eloa can try… But maybe Matias ask him where he get drug from…” Eloa tells the man as she heads back towards the counter. Meanwhile, the man face down with Matias’s foot on his back.. starts to sing softer and softer, infact it looks like he’s smothering himself with his own weight and Matias’s while he’s lying face down.

Matias isn’t trying to kill the man, so he lifts his foot off him and tries to use his shoe to roll the man over onto his back. Crouching down low and sitting on his own haunches the latino reaches out slap the man in the face a few times. “Hey. Hey… Junkie. What is name and where you find happy. Maybe I buy you happy if you tell.” he cajoles the stoner.

The man gets rolled over his back slowly. His eyes are completely glazed, dilated and it looks like he’s looking at something swimming around Matias’s head right then. At least until Matias starts slapping the man. “Ow! Owwwww! Whatcha… doing that…. ooohhhhh cannn you feel the looveee.” The man tries to cup Matias’s face and bring him down for a kiss.

Matias leans back and away from the hand and gives the touchy feely man another slap, “Stop that.” he snaps at the man and should her persist the latino will just stand up and put his foot on one of the man’s forearms to pin it so he cannot be as grabby. “Where do you get happy, tell me.”

The man starts to giggle, his voice almost hoarse at the end of each giggle like he’s having trouble breathing and he doesn’t seem unhappy with Matias’s foot. Infact he’s grabbing Matias’s foot and trying to kiss it, “Happy so happyyyyy. Happpy is greatt… Happpyyy.” The man sings a little staring up bleary eyed. “Is need … things to exchange for more happy..”

Matias does not stop the high man even as he clings and kisses at his shoe, as long as one of the arms is pinned. Given there is no information forth coming he simply looks to Eloa and says, “Do not think is any help here. Should just knock him out and huck him in alley or call hospital to get.”

Having called just hung up the phone, Eloa shakes her head and then frowns at the man, “If he exchange things for happy.. Maybe we follow him? See who he take items to?” Looking around, she goes to find a basket of bronze busts. “Oh look gold! So expensive! Can trade for much happy!” She starts gesturing for Matias to step off of the man and he looks up at Matias and just beams with a slighty crooked front tooth smile.

The look of disdain at giving anything to the man is heavy on Matias’s face but after a few moments he relents and takes his shoe off the man’s forearm and simply steps back letting Eloa give away more things, not counting what is already down this guys pants.

The things down the man’s pants lets face it. Are probably not recoverable. Or at least worth much money once they’re recovered. The man happily hugs the busts and gets to his feet, unsteadily starting to make his way out of the shop. “This will get so much happy.” He coos as he walks swaying back and forth. Do our heroes follow?

Matias looks at Eloa and then towards the door and then back to the young latina. “You know, I could just make him think he lives in California or something and make him go to other side of country. Would solve problem.” he offers in a tone that implies he knows Eloa won’t go for it so he just starts following reluctantly.

Following along after the man, Eloa gives Matias a helpless look, “yes but then think how confused he will be. He is on drugs. Is hard.” She tells him as they make their way down Madison to a small alleyway. The man drops the busts about five times, denting them before bending over to pick them up at the speed of a snail. Finally he enters the alley and points to a van on the other side of the alley. “Happppyyy.” The van is very non descript. White. With a smilie face on the side.

Matias closes his eyes and takes a deep breath before opening them again and telling the man, “Yes happy, go get happy. Have busts to trade.” and then looks aside to Eloa and sighs, “If you no ask, I would have dumped him off at hospital or homeless shelter. Why are you so curious where drugs are?”

“Is many recently who come hospital after take similar drug. Sometimes get bashed. Sometimes get abused. They no remember. But doctor find evidence. Also find many is student. So Eloa think is selling on campus.” Eloa frowns as she presses against the wall when the man starts to head for the van. There’s definitely a distinct rumble of the van turning itself on though as they start approaching.

Matias steps closer to the wall when Eloa tries to be less noticable. Speaking in a quieter voice now as they watch from afar with the van turning on. “Was looking for drug dealer tonight on campus, but this is downtown. You think they are selling across multiple boroughts?” he asks Eloa in that quiet voice.

“Why not? If drug dealer in van no care who sell to. Sell to as many people possible like ice cream truck. You think ice cream truck only stay in one borough?” She stays next to Matias, trying to be hidden as well but alas, as soon as they get a bit closer out of the alley way, the van zips off. There’s not even any plates on the back of the van. Not like there’s any police presence in New haven anyways.

“Noooo! Come back!!” The man starts to wail, falling to his knees when the van drives off. “Come back with happy! I need more happy!!” He waves a bronze bust in the air, “Come backkk.”

Matias watches as the van drives off and then says to Eloa, “Well have to keep eye out for van selling drugs instead of ice cream then. We are not going to try and coral the junkie somewhere too are we?”

“Well Eloa not sure.. Ambluence say take while to come. Police say take longer to come. Anytime anyone say anything to him he will try again.” Eloa frowns down at the man as he holds his busts up to the sky while on his knees as if divine intervention will cause the van to come back. Tugging on her locks of hair, she frowns at the man, “Mister is know where else to get happy?” She asks as the man just drools a bit and looks at the two of them. He starts nodding his head.

Matias reaches a hand up to pinch the bridge of his nose with thumb and forefinger and rub it before dropping his hand down and calling out, “Okay if give you cash for happy, you go there and get more happy?”

“Happy.” The man beams up at Matias, holding up the bust as if trying to trade it for the drug.

“The drug last about 2-3 hours. Then people no know what they doing during the time. Is like zombie. Kindof scary really.” Eloa admits softly, staying behind of Matias and clinging onto his arm a little.

Matias says “Yes Happy, take us to place to buy happy. Other place, then will have cash to buy.

“Okay…is take… buy happy..” The man tries to get to his feet and then collapses onto the ground in a puddle of his own drool as his eyes glaze over.

Eloa sighs softly, “Man is probably at least bit of drug. Now will be like zombie for while until feel better.” She fishes out her phone and sends a text to 911. “Eloa can wait here if Matias need go? For Ambulence?”

Matias says “How long will ambulance take?

Eloa gives Matias a helpless look as she kneels down to roll the man onto his side to recovery position at least. “Is no sure. Sometimes will be fast. Sometimes will be slow.” The woman sighs softly, “it is also full moon tonight.” In the distance there are some sirens. Maybe?

“If is more than thirty minutes, will just go to emergency room. Bind shadow walk and then come back and pull man there.’ Matias says like someone who would literally perform a magical miracle than wait on a druggie.

giggles at little at Matias’s willingness to sacrifice for the man. “Is not bad idea actually. Shadowwalk to hospital. That way if someone injured can take right away. Eloa might need set up sometime.” She admits to Matias with a nod of her head. The sirens seem to come closer.

Matias looks around for the source of the siren or at least to see whether they drive past, “I have good ideas from time to time. Your mother used to set shadow walks at hospitals or near police stations. Was easy way to get somewhere to public for big fight.” he explains to Eloa before squinting in expectation of an ambulance or police car.

Finally around the corner an ambulence appears! But it’s not for Matias. Only 10 minutes later does another ambulence appear with no lights and sirens. They pack the man off into the back of the van, leaving Eloa and Matias to walk back to the shop.

“Thank for being here keep Eloa safe.” Eloa tells Matias with a small smile as they walk
