In Room 107, Windermere Dormitory/span>/spanRoom 107 sits along the ground floor corridor of the Windermere Dormitory,
its heavy wooden door bearing the brass numerals that have darkened with age.
The rectangular space contains two narrow beds positioned against opposite
walls, each accompanied by a simple wooden desk and chair. A tall window with
divided panes looks out toward the university grounds, its glass slightly
warped from decades of New England weather. The hardwood floors, worn smooth
by countless students, creak softly underfoot, particularly near the radiator
that stands beneath the window. Built-in wardrobes of dark wood line one
wall, their doors hanging slightly askew on hinges that have loosened over
time. The white plaster walls show faint cracks near the corners, and the
overhead light fixture, an ornate brass piece from an earlier era, casts
uneven shadows when the bulb flickers. A faint mustiness lingers in the air,
the accumulated scent of old wood, steam heat, and the passage of many
academic years./span>/spanIt is about 65F(18C) degrees. It doesn’t take long for the dampness to evaporate in the late august heat, the shoddy air conditioning keeping only specific sections of the dorm room cool. Perhaps it’s the warmth of the shower, or maybe just the malaise of a lazy Sunday, but it’s hard to think straight, and for the moment laying down feels like an irresistable choice.
Time seems to pass, or maybe it was only moments but the overwhelming fatigue dissipates. Homework for Ms. Robinson’s class is due tomorrow, and it’s gonna be hard to maintain those grades until you graduate middle school next quarter unless you find it quick.
The problem? This isn’t your room, these aren’t your books, and your parent(s) are nowhere to be found.
Did you get like, transported to another world or something? You’re body’s weird, all grown up and stuff. This is so cool! Or horrible!
What does a middle schooler who suddenly finds themselves in the body of their college-age self in this strange world do?
Nemi looks around. Eyes slowly scanning the room. Wait this was’nt right at all- Psychology books? Potted plants?! …. a REVOLVER UNDER THE DESK?!!! Slowly Nemi starts to panic, looking and darting about before she dashes into the bathroom, almost falling over as she grips the sink and looks into the mirror and it is her but it…. is’nt. Taller, older, mostly taller and everything physically as she lets out a shrill yell almost anyone could hear as she runs from the mirror and slams her face back into the pillow! Why would she stay up through all of this? Why not just go back to sleep. But she would’nt…. She slowly rolled over in her bed as she took a shaky panicked breath in.
There’s some time to panic, but not a lot, because within about 5 minutes of suddenly waking up BIG, there’s stifled laughter coming from outside the strange ‘not hers’ door that bars her from the outside world.
Then there’s a knock at said door. Someone from this strange new place wants to invade her slightly safe space.
Nemi takes a breath in- steadying herself as she chuckles a bit. A horrible dream. This had to be that- She had to play along and just live through it…. right? She moves off of the bed- she was dressed already at least as she heads for the door to open it after undoing a few too many deadbolts.
On the other side are two guys, almost Nemi’s height and lanky, but the one standing next to him makes him look towering by comparison. Nemi of course recognizes neither, though the short one looks very nervous to see her. They just kinda stare a moment before the tall one speaks “Hey Nemi. We were just checking up on you, and maybe wanted to invite you to our study group.” he says edgily, clearly a little off kilter and unsure with how to proceed with what should be a pretty bog standard conversation in a college dorm.
The short one speaks “Hey, uh, Nemi. You… feeling okay?” he doesn’t sound concerned so much as probing.
Nemi nods softly, swaying a small bit as she chuckles lightly. A clearly worried tone as she nods a bit. “Oh that’d be uhm…. Nice- What exactly would you guys need my help studying for?” She asks with obvious curiosity as she chuckles a tiny bit to try to dispel worry. “Well I just got out of the shower after waking up…. still a bit woozy- morning tiredness and all.” A lie to her- but to the others it was hopefully believable enough.
At Nemi’s relatively normal response the shorter boy looks worried, and the taller one scowls down at him before looking back to Nemi. “Oh you know how Rodger is always looking for help with the ritual and curse magic. He still can’t get a grasp on it. I figured we could help him out.” There’s a bitter tone to the tall boy’s tone.
Rodger, for his part, is suddenly finding it hard to look either of the other two students in the eye.
Nemi nods softly in agreement as she chuckles. “Oh I can pass you some notes- and tips if anything…” She comments losely. She’d have to have notes on such in a school like this right? She’d have too. “But uhm…. otherwise how are things going?” She asks…. MAGIC?! FUCKING MAGIC?! Okay now this had to be a dream- there was no way this could be real with how strong she felt- being older- and now mentions of stuff only seen in high fantasy games like DND?
Nemi’s poker face may not be perfect, but it seems enough to convince these two. Not that the shorter one is even looking at her. He seems more interested in his shoes “Notes or tips? Uh, yeah that’d be great.” Says the taller, still as of yet unnamed student. “Things are going okay, we’re still, yah know, trying to get into top standing and all. Heh, just need to knock Yuki, Edgar, or… Well, not you obviously, out of the ranking.” he says jovially.
“Sure, we’ll take those notes.” He says, kinda trying to edge his way into her dorm.
For his part, Rodger seems to be more than just shy or embarassed, he seems to be focusing on something, somewhat out of sorts even more so than Nemi.
Nemi nods softly, her glance shoots downwards to look at his feet. She’s seen enough movies, even in her young age to know what this is. This broke down from ‘yeah notes later’ to, well take those notes….. Roger not saying anything hints to her he’s been dragged into…. whatever. Wait she’s top standing? Oh thats sweet m- wait no she needs to stop and focus. Back them away or get them out. “Later- I’ve got stuff to do and breakfast to eat- Gotta feed my cat and all…” She states before nodding softly. “I can pass a few photocopies of the notes then….” she states with a firm nod.
The tall one looks at Nemi funnily “Photocopies?” he asks. Those might have been common in middle school, but it’s been a while since photocopiers have been in regular use. “Uh, yeah. Rodger, c’mon. What’re you even doing? You’re not still focusing on that shit? It clearly didn’t work.” The tall student growls irritably as Nemi urges him back out the door. Maybe he caught sight of that revolver?
“I gotta stay focused, maybe it worked.” he whispers a bit too loudly as both boys start down the hallway, their backs to Nemi.
Nemi chuckles weakly…. oh god the days of skyrim and fallout and listening to the different speech options that were clearly bluffs helped a lot. She still needed to finish that modded run of new vages…. wait if this was time travel would she even be able to now that she was in the future? NON the less she turned her head…. the revolver. She waits. Ready to jump and leap for the thing taped to the underside of the desk as she takes a careful breath in.
As they continue down the hall the boys keep speaking just a bit too loudly “I told you it didn’t work. You can stop concentrating, we got homework to do.” the tall lanky boy says to the shorter one.
“It worked, I swear.” Rodger whines “I’ll just keep her regressed until… until we have to do our presentation tomorrow. And she won’t be able to do it, just have to stay awake and focus….” their chatter continues but becomes too difficult to overhear.
Nemi chuckles, worried…. regressed…. wait- Oh no it was the opposite way around- She was being made into her younger self mentally- But if the boy needed to keep concentration…. she moved, dashing to grab the revolver as she popped out of the door to take a shot off at the two- hoping the startling noise would throw off whatever they were doing.
As Nemi grabs the gun another student happens to be walking down the hall as she pops out. “Oh hey Nemi, what’re you. Oh, EEEEEEKKK!” she screams, causing the two boys to turn and look. “Oh shit, she heard us.” The tall boy grabs Rodger and tugs him into a nearby dorm room.
Silver lining, they’re out of the hallway before the gunshot went off.
Nemi curses. “FUCK YOU TWO!” She yells…. well at least something went right- they ran off. She turns and waves softly as she has no idea who the other student is. “Something something curse- regressed….” She nods softly. “What’s the year by the by?”
The woman looks at Nemi “They… Cast a regression curse on you? Oh my gawd, we should tell teacher! Don’t shoot them though, that’s against school rules unless they’re like a vampire or a werewolf or something.”
She frowns “Uh, what year? It’s like 2025. Gawd, Rodger and Billy are such tools. Hey, I’ll help you, just you know, don’t do anything crazy okay Nemi?”
Nemi frowns. “Man- I wake up in a place where high fantasy is and I can’t even enjoy having a g- Wait…. probably a stupid thing to say- Real life and all…. Twenty twenty five…. seven years….. ish….. yes please- I might go back to panicking because I just shot a real gun at a real person-”
The woman bites her lip and nods “Oh, you thought it was a dream? You should be careful. Even in a dream you could hurt someone if you shot them.” she says softly “At least I think that’s what we learned in dreamworld geography last term.” she adds uncertainly.
She shakes her head as if to clear it. “Wait, just say you were like firing it at the… Ceiling or something maybe? I dunno. But don’t we have that presentation tomorrow? What’re you gonna do?”
Nemi hums, rubbing her chin softly. “Well we know which room they ducked into- They’ll be in there for a few minutes…. This is- College I guess by the timeline….. Grab a professor so they can force the two to drop whatever their doing?” She asks curiously. “could you I mean-”
The girl smiles brightly “Oh, Lindsey. We had a magical physics lab together. It’s the best grade I’ve gotten all semester! And totes, we can find a teacher and tattle. I can grab the teacher and you can like, maybe keep them in the dorm room? They probably think you’re crazy now so I bet they won’t dare come out.”
Nemi says “They put a thirteen year old who’s grown up on a farm that’s hunt dear before and has access to video games during free time in the body of a grown woman with a gun….“
Nemi says “I’ll keep them in there.“
Nemi nods softly. Chuckling a bit softer. “Hey look when you get good grades you get good rewards- And its not like its consumed my life… Anyways- Back to the point- Get the professor or whomever-”
Nemi says “I think I want to go back to older me before I start losing it!“
Over the next fifteen minutes the plan progresses:
And so it is, that despite the boy’s attempts to escape, Nemi keeps them pinned in the empty dorm room until a teacher can be summoned. Pulling the boys out of the room by the ears. Rodger is collared with a naturalizer, and the taller boy; Billy joins him as their carted off to a detention center for errant youths. Initially it looks like the professor is about to punish Nemi as well, but with her and Lindsey there to explain that the boys had regressed her to a 13 year old, punishment is ultimately abandoned, and it’s deemed the boy’s own fault for reducing hardened, combat trained farm girls to the mental state of an adolescent.
The memories come back to Nemi gradually, her high school, her departure for college, getting a job downtown, and her enrollment in university. And at last, she is herself again.
Nemi sighs softly as she now sits on the bed and chuckles with a worried tone to herself. “God dammit….”
