(Alice’s Memorial Lantern Festival)
[Mon Aug 25 2025]
Elm Street Cemetery/span>/spanafter dusk/span>76F(24C) degrees, and there are clear skies. The mist is heaviest At Birch and Rosewood/span>/span There is a waxing crescent moon.
“I’ll give people time to filter in,” Alice mentions, breaking her gazing out at graves to instead pay attention to those who have gathered already. She gives Fern a bright, wide smile, offering a hand and introducing herself: “Alice Renwick. Nice to meet you, Fern.”
Alice adds, “We have the same taste in sweaters!”
Annabelle does the rounds of the cemetery, exploring in search of a grave and relieved on her return. “Different cemetery. Phew.”
Fern relaxes some and puts on more of a smile. “It’s good to meet you all and we do!” She chuckles to Alice as she gives her own sweater a little tug. “They’re very comfortable.”
“D-did Teagan get – Hi, Jasper.” Annabelle greets distractedly as she blinks at her phone, “-Does anyone know who I’m talking about? The violinist? She was in the UC- Urgent Care, just last afternoon. I think someone’s already hit her with a car.”
Sofia shakes her head gently to Annabelle and says, “I don’t think I’ve met Teagan, no.”
Giving a wan smile, Eloa waves at Jasper, Sofia, Annabelle and Alice as she slowly picks her way through the gravestones. “Eloa spent some time with Teagan this morning? Unless you mean she got hit by car… AGAIN?” Eloa asks Annabelle horrified.
“Teagan?” Alice asks with some concern, brow furrowed. She hovers over near the tables, looking at the food, but she grimaces at the thought. “Sorry to hear. I hope she’s okay.”
Jasper says “Hope she gets well soon.“
“I could’ve sworn she had stomach lacerations from monsters..” Annabelle mumbles, holding a hand to her own head in a feverish sigh. “Or maybe I’m mixing cases. I’ll check in with her before I go to bed.”
Alice moves from her spot by the tables over to a spot by the grave marked for an unknown woman. It’s a simple cross, but she stops in front of it, bowing her head before turning to everyone else. “Please help yourself to the food. After a short service, we’ll start the lanterns. It’s my hope that today, all of you are able to reflect on death in a healthy way. Death is sad, but it doesn’t have to be a source of infinite grief.”
“It’s nice to meet you all.” Fern offers (a touch belatedly) with a smile as she takes in the area and then looks toward Alice again as she speaks up, nodding with some interest, moving a bit closer to the food to try some.
Glancing over at Fern, Eloa smiles, “Sorry what was your name?” She asks as she heads for the food, looking at everything curiously before picking up a BBQ pork bun because she can probably eat a entire basket of Xiao long bao herself.
Sofia takes up her position by the little dim sum spread, hands folded behind her back, just listening to Alice with a faint smile.
Nemi sighs as she runs up and stops, catching her breath after a few moments…. having made it finally.
“Nice meet Fern. Am Eloa.” Eloa puts her hand on her chest and then goes back to nibbling her bao.
Alice straightens herself up by her spot at the cross, looking out at those gathered. She closes her eyes a moment, and it’s obvious for all to see that she’s collecting herself, gathering her thoughts, and centering. A deep breath in, and a deep breath out, then she begins. There’s no quiver in her voice as she eulogizes, “Tonight, we gather here to remember those we’ve lost. We gather not to grieve, but to memorialize. Not for death to be a source of grief, but for it to be a passing, a time of moving onto a new journey.”
She pauses to take a breath, then carries on, “We’ve all lost loved ones, I’m sure. Some of us this very year. New Haven has seen a lot of conflict, a lot of heartbreak, a lot of horror. Just last week, we saw two people cut down before their time. And although death has a tenuous hold on those so near the gate, it still breaks the heart. It still leaves scars.” Another pause. “So, tonight, we will honor those lost, those found, and those gone to the next adventure.”
Alice gestures first to the cross by which she stands, drawing attention to it. “Here is the grave of an unknown woman. I buried her myself, for it was the failing under my responsibility which led to her death. A werewolf lost control under the auspice of the full moon, and lunacy saw her life ended.” She frowns, trying to sweep the crowd in a ‘fake eye contact’ public speaking trick, but it’s obvious it’s hard for her. “She died scared, and in pain, and so mauled that she could not be identified. We still haven’t found her family. They won’t be here to mourn her passing. And so it falls to us to remember her, even without her name.”
Alice makes her way to the box of lanterns, taking one out and, with a small pen, writing something on the inside. She returns to the cross, reaches inside the lantern, and lights the little candle right in the center, holding onto it as the paper shell inflates. “For the unknown victim of the full moon, I wish for a peaceful passing. I hope you find comfort and warmth on the other side, and I’m sorry we couldn’t save you. May the injustice done to you never happen again.” With that, she releases the lantern, letting it float into the sky.
Alice uses a box of lanterns: 89The83 wi89nd 83cat77che76s t75he 76lan75ter11n a10s t11he 10can04dle98 li04fts98 it62 ge26ntl62y i26nto62 th26e a26ir, 62a n26ame62 an26d a62 so98ul 04rid98ing04 al10ong11 fo10r a11 tr75ip 76to 75a p76eac77efu83l e89ver83 af89ter.
“I’d like to invite everyone else to gather around and remember those you’ve lost. You don’t have to say anything – but if you want to, please do. We’ll listen. We’ll grieve with you. And when you release their name into the sky, borne aloft by a lantern, let them go in your heart.” Alice/i/span/b ends with a smile. “Let them pass on.”
“Wait why wouldn’t the order use charion coins to bring her back? If she is innocent?” Eloa asks Alice confused as she watches the lantern flaot up into the sky.
“Our ability to bargain with Charon robs death of some of its gravitas,” Alice answers Eloa with her voice soft and slow. “But even I, for all my reach, can’t bargain for the nameless.”
“Oh.. well maybe can get forensics people to recreate her face, like in NCIS and bones from bone structure and post picture. Surely someone will claim and then you can bring her back.” Eloa tells Alice with a small wan smile as she looks up again at the lantern floating off.
Nemi nods in agreement with someone taking a breath in and letting it out as she winces.
Sofia keeps her head reverently bowed as Alice speaks, then lifts her gaze to watch the lantern float away, a faint expression of mourning tugging her lips slightly downwards into a frown. She glances over to Eloa with a somewhat flat expression, then nods gently to Alice’s explanation. When the Brazilian woman insists upon pressing the issue, she interjects and offers, “Perhaps there’s a more appropriate time to bring up these concerns. Say, not when someone is giving a presentation?”
Nemi nods in agreement with Alice, taking a breath in and letting it out as she winces.
Annabelle approaches the lantern, first with a casual thought as she follows on rails unto the task, still watching the lantern fly. And then something more leaden curls her fingers away from it, just as the precipice of grabbing it. Stunned in awe, she takes one but doesn’t let it fly. If the lantern is to send away those that are gone, she keeps instead their souls close in her arms.
Chastised by Sofia, Eloa nods her head, “Oh yes sorry.” She blushes a little, standing off to the side.
Sofia gives Eloa a reassuring, grateful little smile and dips her head respectfully.
Dovie walks in a bit late, trying to be unobtrusive.
“I have another, if people are still feeling shy,” Alice announces, Sofia having handled the questions on her behalf. She takes another lantern in her hands, turning her gaze to Stelle. She approaches, reaching out to touch gently on the woman’s arm, then says, “This lantern is for someone lost to us, yet still in our midst. Someone who can never be reclaimed, not with coins, not with bargains, not with all the begging in the world.” She writes a name inside and, with heated fingers, lights the candle within, holding out the quickly-inflating lantern to Stelle. “This is for Ella Fournier.”
Stelle looks at Alice, taking the lantern and keeping her eyes on the redhead. “P-pardon?” she inquires, posture shifting from wallflower to center stage awe as she lowers her head and bites her lower lip. She takes a deep breath, eyes on Alice still and then looking out to the crowd. “Yes.. Euh… For Ella… I.. Do not like to think of her as dead just yet… but I suppose you are right.”
Going to pick up a lantern, Eloa lights the fire and holds it in her hands for a moment. The light of the lantern reflects on the latina’s face as she holds it up towards the sky. As the wind blows past to pick it up, she lets it go. “For Elpis. Who stood up for the weak and faced a pack of wolves with only his spear.”
Another pause, Stelle’s head bowed momentarily before she releases her lantern and settles back into the crowd.

Dovie/i/span/b is quiet, respectfully watching those releasing lanterns in the air. Her eyes track their journeys into the sky, floating up further and further away.
Alice watches Stelle and then Eloa with a bright smile, eyes tracking the lanterns as they go. “The lanterns symbolize the passage from this world to the next. It symbolizes our ability to let them go. It symbolizes their peace as they begin anew.” She adds, “We can’t lose sight of the importance of death, even this close to the gate. I know we’ve seen some come and go many times – the werewolves, Constance, Meridith… but we can’t simply let that blind us to the gravity of death. If you’ve lost someone, anyone at all, please come forward and release them into the wind. A parent… a lover… a pet…”
Dipping her head at the mention of the deceased once more, a little smile comes to Sofia’s lips, a thoughtful twinkle in her eyes, and she steps up after Alice, Stelle, and Eloa are done eulogizing. She picks up a lantern of her own, and scribbles something on a piece of paper. “Some of you know, I lived a different life before this, and my fate was shifted to what I am today. My past self, before I became me, was a mercenary. Killed for money. I may never know the names of those victims, but I have fleeting images in my brain, broken fragments of memories. I want to remember them always. So I can remember the innocent I fight to protect today.” Tucking the names away, she lights the lantern, watching it sail away, tears slightly welled in her eyes.
Sofia uses a box of lanterns: 89Fl83ame89 le83ap77s t76o l75ife76 i75nsi11de 10the11 l10ant04ern98 an04d 98exp62and26s i62ts26 pa62per26 sh26el62l, 26sen62di26ng 62it 98alo04ft98 be04ari10ng 11pr10eci11ous75 ca76rg75o t76o t77he 83ot89her83 si89de.
Alice sneaks a little bite of food while others are working on their lanterns.
“For the lost souls at the woods back in New York,” Jasper/i/span/b speaks, walking towards a lantern to pick it up. “The first ones that caused me to fear myself and change to protect the people. As well as the one victim here when I did not know it would happen again.”
Jasper uses a box of lanterns: 89Fl83ame89 le83ap77s t76o l75ife76 i75nsi11de 10the11 l10ant04ern98 an04d 98exp62and26s i62ts26 pa62per26 sh26el62l, 26sen62di26ng 62it 98alo04ft98 be04ari10ng 11pr10eci11ous75 ca76rg75o t76o t77he 83ot89her83 si89de.
Fern is quietly watching the proceedings. She doesn’t seem to have a need for a lantern just yet, or maybe she’s mulling on it.
Jasper says “The first two, to be exact./i/span/b“
Nemi steps up to one of the lanterns, taking a breath in as she sighs softly. “My lantern is to not one name but many- Hubert J Hulwitz. A university janitor noone may have known but died recently. Someone who lived in the background, life not connected maybe directly to all of this but still had a life- I want my lantern to be for him and others who may not have a person to remember them or send them off….”

Picking up another lantern, Eloa/i/span/b lights it with another flame, moving off to the side. She looks into the flame for a bit and then lifts the lantern up to the sky, watching it leave her fingertips. “For Hester. Who went to appease the monster so that none of us would have to.”
Gabriel arrives very fashionably late but still at least arrives and joins the others, watching silently for now.
Once his lantern is sent off towards the air, Jasper turns to wipe his face with one arm.
Annabelle watches the memories of others fly away, perhaps absolved and liberated, perhaps not. But nothing changes for the lantern clasped in her arms. It is given a name, crudely with an awkward grip, but the candle is not set within it. Back still to the floating candles moving to the beyond, taken by the gales of the ocean, she leaves the gathering.
Dovie makes her way in line to claim a lantern. She writes two names down on a piece of paper, tucking it into the lantern. “I dedicate this to my parents, Oscar and Holly-” Her voice breaks for a moment, tears welling in her eyes as she visibly takes a moment to compose herself. “Taken from this world too soon,” she says, simply, lighting up the lantern and releasing it into the sky.
Dovie uses a box of lanterns: 89Wi83th 89the83 ca77ndl76e l75it 76and75 th11e l10ant11ern10 re04lea98sed04, 98it 62flo26ats62 up26 an62d a26way26, d62rif26tin62g t26hro62ugh98 th04e 98sky04 as10 it11 ca10rri11es 75its76 me75mor76ial77 to83 th89e b83eyo89nd.
“Hi Alice,” Patience/i/span/b says as she steps away from her horse and over to the gathered group. “Terribly sorry that I’m late.” She leans in to try and give the redhead a little peck of a kiss on the cheek before drawing back and offering, “Hey everyone.” On catching what Eloa has to say, her eyes widen a bit, and she falls silent.
Nemi nods softly to Eloa and Jasper. Taking a step back, hearing the names and those spoken. She nods softly again….
Dovie looks up pensively at the lanterns in the sky.
Sighing softly as she lets the lantern go, Eloa goes to stand by Nemi and Jasper, bowing her head a little.
“Hi, Pax,” Alice says, making her cheek more easily accessible for Patience and putting a hand around the woman in a quick hug. “Glad you could make it. People are taking turns using the lanterns; you write the name of someone you want to remember, to memorialize… and you release them to the other side.” She smiles, and adds, “There’s no pressure, though. It’s heavy emotion, so take your time.”
Gabriel takes some time before he finally goes up and picks a lantern. A single name is quickly scrawled on a piece of paper that gets placed inside. For a moment he just holds the lantern, looking at it before he finally speaks, “This is for my mom. Sarah.” With that he lights the lantern and reluctantly sets it free before stepping back with the rest.
Gabriel uses a box of lanterns: 89Wi83th 89the83 ca77ndl76e l75it 76and75 th11e l10ant11ern10 re04lea98sed04, 98it 62flo26ats62 up26 an62d a26way26, d62rif26tin62g t26hro62ugh98 th04e 98sky04 as10 it11 ca10rri11es 75its76 me75mor76ial77 to83 th89e b83eyo89nd.
Patience nods her understanding to Alice, but spends a moment observing the interaction between Sofia and Dovie. Her expression softens somewhat, and enough to give Gabriel a nod to follow her first. After a long moment, she steps foward to pick up a lantern.
She doesn’t write on the paper though, but instead whispers after a long moment, not raising her voice at all. “This is for the ones whose names should be tattooed on my heart and etched into my brain, but aren’t. People I never knew, but hope I never, ever forget. People who just didn’t deserve what happened to them, because of me.” She doesn’t clarify, nor does she wipe away the single tear that slides down her cheek as she turns away from the crowd to let the lantern go.
Patience uses a box of lanterns: 89Fl83ame89 le83ap77s t76o l75ife76 i75nsi11de 10the11 l10ant04ern98 an04d 98exp62and26s i62ts26 pa62per26 sh26el62l, 26sen62di26ng 62it 98alo04ft98 be04ari10ng 11pr10eci11ous75 ca76rg75o t76o t77he 83ot89her83 si89de.
Alice steps forward to retrieve another lantern, her eyes as wet with tears as anyone’s, but she holds back her sniffles as she speaks. “I’m lighting this lantern for all those who gave their lives for a good cause. Every Sword, Shield, and Scroll who has come before us, who put everything on the line, knowing they were making the world a better place for it.” She reaches inside, lighting the candle with the brush of a fingertip, and holds onto the lantern as it inflates. “For those who are fighting and dying even now. Let us remember how lucky we are to be here. To be able to remember those we love. To be able to go home tonight, sleep in our beds, and hug our loved ones. May we always be so lucky.”
Going to pick up another lantern, Eloa/i/span/b brings it back to Jasper and Nemi’s side after watchign Patience send off hers, “For mama.” She whispers softly, her eyes glistening as she holds the lantern aloft of the winds to catch.
Alice uses a box of lanterns: 89Wi83th 89the83 ca77ndl76e l75it 76and75 th11e l10ant11ern10 re04lea98sed04, 98it 62flo26ats62 up26 an62d a26way26, d62rif26tin62g t26hro62ugh98 th04e 98sky04 as10 it11 ca10rri11es 75its76 me75mor76ial77 to83 th89e b83eyo89nd.
Dovie/i/span/b reaches for a piece of dim sum, carefully, chewing quietly.
Fern quietly slips away.
Seraphina uses a box of lanterns: 89The83 wi89nd 83cat77che76s t75he 76lan75ter11n a10s t11he 10can04dle98 li04fts98 it62 ge26ntl62y i26nto62 th26e a26ir, 62a n26ame62 an26d a62 so98ul 04rid98ing04 al10ong11 fo10r a11 tr75ip 76to 75a p76eac77efu83l e89ver83 af89ter.
Despite the serious nature of the events, Dovie’s/i/span/b eyes light up at easting one piece of dim sum, and she methodically makes her way through them all in the background.
Sofia beams a smile as she watches Dovie enjoying her cooking, the action seeming to simultaneously lift her own mood too.
Eloa uses a box of lanterns: 89The83 wi89nd 83cat77che76s t75he 76lan75ter11n a10s t11he 10can04dle98 li04fts98 it62 ge26ntl62y i26nto62 th26e a26ir, 62a n26ame62 an26d a62 so98ul 04rid98ing04 al10ong11 fo10r a11 tr75ip 76to 75a p76eac77efu83l e89ver83 af89ter.
Alice steps back from the box of lanterns and moves instead to the unknown grave, bowing her head in front of it and saying a silent prayer. Eventually, she retreats to Stelle’s side, wiping at her eyes with a palm and seeking one of the French woman’s hands for comfort, sniffling as she goes.
Ella walks past headstones towards the gathering, seemingly deliberately avoiding the gravel paths and choosing to walk on the lawn, perhaps owed to her being barefoot. A few paces before she reaches the crowd she stops, hands in her jeans pockets, watching the ceremony with the awkward nonchalance of someone who is lost and tries not to show it.
Alice speaks up once she’s gotten her composure back, intoning, “I really want to thank everyone for coming. I know it’s somber, but… I hope that by releasing these lanterns to the wind, you can also release those feelings. Feel the grief. Don’t fight it. Let it wash over you… and then let it go. Always remember that death is just a natural part of life. Don’t lose sight of its importance.” A pause. “Remember those who’ve gone ahead of you… and leave behind enough kindness that those who come after you will want to remember you, too.”
Dovie/i/span/b nods solemnly at Alice. and then snags herself another fried sesame ball.
Nemi nods solemnly in agreement with Alice, a sad look on her face, despite her usual soft smile being gone, it’s genuine.
Patience gives a wan smile to those gathered here with Alice. With a quiet sigh, she reaches up to run her fingers through her hair, then turns and slips away.
Speaking up a little hesitantly, Sofia asks, “Does anyone uh… wanna share some happy memories about the people they’ve lost?” She gives a little sheepish grin. “I could use some happy memories. And please, snack away people, enjoy.”
Lifting her fingers in greeting towards Seraphina, Eloa makes her way over to the woman who released a lantern without a name. She gives Seraphina a gentle smile, “Ola Miss Hawke.”
Dovie looks a little sad at Sofia’s ask, as positive as it is and slowly fades off into the background.
Seraphina clears her throat when Eloa appraches, the distance in her gaze, from memory, perhaps, ceasing, and her mind returning to the present. “Oh, hello, Eloa. How are you?” She beckons to Sofia with her fingers. “Come here.”
“Eloa-I am okay.. How are you? Is sad but… Eloa did want light lantern for Elpis before. So is glad can do it now.” Eloa admits softly, her emerald flecked hazel eyes glancing over at Seraphina.
Sofia comes to Seraphina as bidden and without question, slumping into her with a big, squeezing hug and hiding her face in her shoulder for a while.
Seraphina wraps Sofia up in an embrace, letting her bury her face into the softness of her hug for as long as she needs, giving squeezes and caresses as long as she needs, too. She smiles a small thing at Eloa. “I am a little upset at myself for getting her so late.” She glances aside to Alice. “Time got away from me, though. But I am glad to have lit one, myself.” She adds, to Eloa, “I like to think that all the thoughts will return to your mama, and she smiles down at you.” She leans her head on the top of Sofia’s head a moment. “Maybe you can share something happy like Sof’s suggestion.”
Alice looks away from Stelle for a moment to give Seraphina a weak smile, waving her hand as if to dismiss the notion. “It’s not late. People come and go as they need. And we’re just about done, so I don’t want to hold anyone up. I don’t have any more big announcements,” she says softly.
Sofia is comforted by Seraphina, eyes sliding shut for a time as she rests, breathes, sniffling lightly as she calms down. She squeezes her comforter back for a moment, then gently disentangles, looking over to Alice with a faint smile and slightly puffy eyes. “It was… really beautiful to hear everyone else’s struggles, the things on their minds. Just really… personalized it so much, showed people’s values, their love, their cares. I… find it weirdly comforting, positive, that people love so much.”
Nemi nods softly as she looks around and listens to others.
Ella keeps lingering near the headstone she has chosen to keep company a few paces away from the fringe of the gathering. She hunches her shoulders pensively and licks the left corner of her mouth intently for a moment, as if cleaning something off it.
Stelle pauses a bit, exhaling deeply at Alice and falls into a moment of silence. She takes her time, cycling through something within before she finally pipes up, head turning towards Ella. “Ella euh.. When we were young I used to sneak up behind her and tickle her whenever she was drinking something. She would get so mad. My maman too, furious really, because there was always a mess.”
Alice smiles when she finally gets her eyes, giving Stelle’s hand a squeeze as the woman speaks. Her eyes track King as he enters, too, and she waves with her free hand, telling him in a low voice, “King, if you want to send off a lantern, please feel free. You just write the name of who you want to remember, light it, and let it go. You don’t have to say anything about it, if you don’t want.”
King sneaks his way into the gathering, better late than never perhaps. When he gets spotted, he freezes, like he was trying to get away with not being noticed. He’s about as stealthy as an explosion though, so it stands to reason he is terrible for that particular mission. He clears his throat and then tells Alice, “I don’t … know her name.” He gulps down a swallow of backed up saliva then, but he crosses over to look at the lanterns as if to see if he can figure out a way to make this work.
“Just light a candle and send it off,” Seraphina says to King, gently. “I’m sure any of us can sympathize with you…” She nods to Stelle. “That’s great, actually. A fun, joyous memory. Because I am sure that it would only bring more laughter.”
“Except perhaps from your mother.” Seraphina considers.
Ella turns her head towards Stelle as she hears her speak, otherwise standing perfectly still like a statue, keeping her sunglasses turned towards her even long after she has finished talking, showing no other reaction.
King gathers a lantern, a candle, and a match. He writes something on the memorial sheet. Anyone that happens to be close enough might be able to make it out: I’m so sorry. He crosses over to the unmarked grave and crouches down before it. He bows his head and closes his eyes. He is there, silent, for a long while. When he does finally look up, he sniffles a little and brushes the back of his hand across the bridge of his nose. Then he sets the little lantern down with the paper. He lights the candle, and lets it take off before blowing out the match. He remains there, closing his eyes again as little twitches ripple across his form.
King uses a box of lanterns: 89The83 wi89nd 83cat77che76s t75he 76lan75ter11n a10s t11he 10can04dle98 li04fts98 it62 ge26ntl62y i26nto62 th26e a26ir, 62a n26ame62 an26d a62 so98ul 04rid98ing04 al10ong11 fo10r a11 tr75ip 76to 75a p76eac77efu83l e89ver83 af89ter.
Stelle/i/span/b remains a bit silent after her words. A lot silent actually, the only noise from her the rustle of clothing as the blonde leans towards Alice.
Sofia dips her head at King and gives him a sympathetic look, slipping her phone away and chewing gently at her lower lip.
Alice bows her head respectfully, letting King get his emotions out. She leans back into Stelle, taking comfort in the intimacy, and as King’s lantern drifts up and into the air, she tracks it with her eyes, before saying, “I think we’ve all had enough sadness for the night,” letting her words carry in the quiet. “Thank you all for coming.”
Nemi nods softly once more, stopping as she looks up towards the sky at all the rising lanterns. So many lives and souls represented… so many lost
Patience is back, back again. But this time, she approaches the group in time to observe King’s grief. Pausing only for a moment, the diva drifts past the table and the others gathered there, to sit herself down beside the grave that the man lingers over. Quietly, she reaches out to touch his arm in a gesture of pure empathy.
Giving Sofia and Seraphina a bit of room to hug, Eloa’s hazel eyes glance over at King as he arrives to light a lantern. Her chestnut curls drift through the hair, tugged by the same wind that’s tugging the lanterns into the sky and she sighs softly as she looks up at the dots that are drifting higher and higher into the night sky.
Stelle begins to stand, steps taken towards Ella before she asks, “Need a ride back?”
Ella lets Stelle’s question linger in the air for a few moments before she answers in French: “No. But you will give me one anyway.”
King jerks a little when he feels a hand on him. But he looks over at Patience. He is silent as he watches her for those few moments, wrangling his thoughts for a good long time. Finally, he presses his lips into a line, then nods and turns back toward the cross and lowers his head again. Even as Alice suggests dispersing, he remains, quiet, nearly alone, but oblivious to most of what goes on surrounding him for a time.
Seraphina nibbles on one of the scallion pancakes after Sofia shares with her, nodding and giving the other woman a empathic soft smile. “I do not know the name of the person I lit a candle for either. Not that that helps…” She furrows her brow. “But you took the time to remember them, anyway.”
Giving Seraphina a nod, Eloa goes to approach the two at the cross of the unknown woman.
Sofia bumps gently into Seraphina again, unable to resist giving her another hug as she munches on another little sesame dessert ball. “Yeah. Can’t go back in time, can’t figure all that out, just have to… move forward and remember what we can, and try to do better.”
Picking her way across the gravestones carefully, Eloa comes up behind of Patience and King, glancing at the two, she takes a breath and lets it out slowly as she slowly approaches.
Nemi walks over to Jasper, standing next to him and giving his elbow a little bump. “You okay there big college dog? Didn’t think I’d see you here … wanna chat?”
Patience sighs
Seraphina tilts her head again at Eloa as she walks away, perhaps having not heard her earlier, “Did you want to share a happier memory of your mother, Eloa?” she puts her arm around Sofia’s waist to give her a squish to her side. “You’re right. And, I’ve been feeling a bit better lately. I haven’t contacted that Detectice yet, but I really should…”
Turning to glance at Seraphina, since she didn’t hear, Eloa gives Seraphina a sad smile, “She died to protect Eloa. Been keeping Eloa safe from Eloa’s father since Eloa became teenager. We were constantly running… ” Her lower lip trembles a little given the memory isn’t happy, not even close.
Sofia nods gently back to Seraphina, rubbing her back in slow circles. “You should. When… it’s not in the scary moment, I’m sure her point of view will change a little bit, you know? Sometimes things need time to diffuse.” She dips her head and frowns slightly after Eloa speaks, nodding understandingly.
Leaving her sad story, Eloa moves over to King’s side leaning down to whisper in his ear for a moment.
Patience offers King a soft smile and then turns to drift back to the tables while Eloa whispers to him.
Seraphina smooches Sofia’s cheek, leaving a glossy imprint there, before she pulls away so she can look over what food she’s brought. “Thank you again, Alice.. When you have a moment sometime… I would like to speak with you? Not tonight, mind.”
“Sure,” Alice says to Seraphina with a bright smile. “Reach out any time.”
Alice collects the remnants of the lanterns, and begins to break away, moving respectfully through the graves. She gives a last glance back, lifting a hand. “Thanks again, everyone, for coming. Spend the time you need reflecting, and then go home to your loved ones. Hug them tight.”
King(wolf) sitting before the cross of the Unknown Woman. He glances around for a moment, and then throws his head back to let out a forlorn howl that sounds like a part of his own soul has been shredded in the process. He lets out several more in rapid succession, each one sounding sadder, but altered enough in pitch. Like he is singing. And lamenting. And grieving. And letting every bit of his pent in emotion out through the howling song of his kind. When he is finally done, he curls down and lays in front of the grave, tucking his tail over his snout.
