Beneath a Glass–Floored Aquatic Atrium
The Floorquarium serves as the rescue center’s central atrium, its most
striking feature being the reinforced glass floor that spans the entire
space, offering visitors a view directly into the waters of the bay below.
The thick, tempered glass panels are set into a steel framework, with
non-slip coating applied in strategic patterns to ensure safe footing while
maintaining visibility. Natural light filters down through a geodesic glass
dome overhead, creating shifting patterns of light and shadow across the
floor as clouds pass above. The circular space rises two stories, with a
diameter of approximately forty feet, and the structural columns supporting
the dome are clad in brushed steel that reflects the aquatic light from
below. The water beneath the glass floor reveals the sandy bottom of the bay,
scattered with rocks and kelp beds, where wild fish occasionally pass
through, their shadows creating movement across the faces of visitors looking
down. The constant presence of seawater beneath the floor creates a subtle
humidity in the air, and the glass transmits a faint vibration when larger
marine life swims close to the surface below. Sound carries easily in the
domed space, with conversations from the connected areas – the Kelp Cafe to
the north, the entrance to the east, the Cavern Tavern to the south, and the
gift shop to the west – creating a constant low murmur that mingles with the
mechanical hum of the climate control systems.
It is about 50F(10C) degrees. The mist is heaviest At Autumn and Woodcrest
Obadiah waves as he walks in with Teagan carrying two heavy pans of meat and sets them down on the tables “Hello hello everyone! Happy Holidays!” He waves to Helen and Eirwen when they walk in too
There is a flicker of a frown at her phone as she steps in, but Teagan tucks it away and undoes her coat at least in the at least marginally warmer environs. The redhead gives a wave in return to Matthew, Malin, and Chance as she arrives at Obadiah’s side. She does step aside to be out of the way of the pans as they’re set in place, catching sight of Helen and Eirwen arriving, lifting a hand in greeting to the former while there’s a look over the latter.
“We could have brought pickles and icecream,” Malin insists to Matthew, arching her left eyebrow some and trying to make it appear as if she is serious before she’s setting down the food she’s brought. As Helen arrives, she waves to the woman before telling Chance, “It was a good prank, though!”
“As long as they’re dill pickles and the ice cream’s good, I’m down,” Chance says to Malin, not seeming opposed to an unconventional friendsgiving.
“I made one of Matthew’s employees get me one of those combos yesterday,” Malin explains to Chance. “It wasn’t really that good, but pregnancy woman are supposed to crave it.”
Eirwen steps inside with Helen, holding her hand and looking down at the glass floor with the fish below in a mixture of awe and trepidation.
“They are definitely dill pickles,” Matthew confirms to Chance, “and they’re dalloped with…” he doesn’t seem sure and asks Malin, “was it just vanilla?” The newest arrivals, Helen and Eirwen earn a wave, the latter of the two has him squinting just a touch, “Eirwen, right?” A beat, and then, “Hey, Helen!”
“You just need to find your own specific bizarre pregnancy craving,” Chance opines to Malin. “Pretty sure you’re allowed.”
Matthew nods agreement with Chance.
Eirwen lifts her gaze from the fish beneath their feet, lifting a hand to wave at Obadiah then nodding at Matthew. “Yes, Eirwen. I remember you from the raid a few hours ago.”
Malin produces a faint hmm sound, humming it out softly as she considers Chance’s words and Matthew’s nod. “Fair enough. I wonder if it will be like when you are really stoned and you crave a sandwich, but you make a sandwich out of basically everything that is in your fridge and then shove a bunch of potato crisps in there along with a fried egg, and then drizzle it with chocolate syrup.” Then she admits, “I hope not.”
Chance considers that mental image and then says, “Well, hopefully in the end it would be whatever you might actually want to eat,” with a laugh. “But sure. Something like that.. ish.”
Helen waves towards people with her free hand as she steps inside. She is walking beside Eirwen when she does, holding the woman’s hand and she smiles towards people as she steps within, “Good evening, everyone, thank you for hosting this. I unfortunately, am coming empty-handed, food-wise, so I do apologize. Just one of those days…” She looks down towards the floor as well, and leans in closer to Eirwen, “This really is something…”
Liri pads in, a bottle under one arm, two massive bowls carried, and set carefully down, nearly dropping the drink as she puts it down the too.
Obadiah looks between Eirwen and Helen and the held hand, a smile coming to his lips before he turns and sees Liri as well, “Miss Ransom!” He greets then spreads his hand to Helen, “There is plenty of food for everyone, please everyone get a plate, enjoy the food and company.”
“Listen, you had me up until chocolate syrup,” Matthew admits to Malin as he continues to nod that agreement with Chance. He shrugs his shoulders but then Liri is supplying all that mash and the soda and he starts clapping. “Ayyyyy, Liri to the rescue, I was literally just saying that I forgot to bring a drink but cranberry soda looks great.”
Malin mms and nods to Chance before grinning broadly, but when Matthew says he’d eat it without the drizzle, she says, “You get high and I can make us both food when the cravings end up coming. If they do.”
“I’m always your savior when you don’t have better, Matthew,” Liri says to Matthew, winking. She checks her pockets – a skirt, with POCKETS! – but seems she’s grabbed out everything she brought.
To Obadiah, she explains, a soft smile given, “People always forget drinks. I figured a bottle of soda wouldn’t go amiss.”
“It really is,” Eirwen agrees with Helen, looking back down at the glass beneath her feet again. “I have never seen anything like it before.”
“It is incredibly how thick some of this has to be to really maintain structural integrity,” Helen says as she stares down at the floor. She seems to consider it all for a short time before lifting her gaze back upwards and stepping closer to the food, leading Eirwen as well as she gestures towards the woman and then to Obadiah and some others, “This is Eirwen, in case people have not met her before.” She looks aside to the woman she walks with, “It all looks pretty tasty.”
“I was thinking drinks and chips are the things you always end up with too much of,” Teagan says absently before looking down at her phone. There is a sigh and she murmurs vague excuses to those nearby her and meanders off to some spot over yonder to do the pacing thing while on the phone.
Malin gazes down at the floor, appearing impressed by it as Helen speaks. Blue-grey eyes raise and find Eirwen as she’s introduced and she relays, “Nice to meet you, Eirwen. I’m Dobie.”
“I’m used to feeding a Ransom family gathering,” Liri says to Teagan with a warm smile. “Never enough meat, never enough drinks.”
Eirwen follows Helen to the tables, looking over the food as well and then glancing back to Malin with a small smile. “Hello, Dobie. It is very nice to meet you. And congratulations,” she says, gesturing lightly towards the woman’s middle.
“You all know me but I am Obie, the Mercer who isn’t King or Miles,” Obadiah says as he looks around the room and smiles when Jasper shows up too.
“Oh, thank you,” Malin expresses warmly to Eirwen in return, one hand cupping tenderly over that little baby bump.
Upon arrival, Jasper takes a glance at the glass floor and blinks twice. He looks up and smiles, waving as he makes his way towards the crowd.
“Dobie is a friend of mine but we don’t get to see each other too often, separate lives and all that,” Helen says to Eirwen as she lifts the hand holding the woman’s hand to make the gesture towards Malin and then towards Matthew, “That is Moothew, an old friend as well!” She looks towards the food, taking in a deep inhale, “I think… do you want to share a plate?” She looks over to Eirwen, curiously.
Chance smiles and says, “Hello, Eirwen. I’m Chance, nice to meet you,” as they are introduced. Noticing Jasper entering he lifts a hand and waves to him in greeting as well.
Matthew heads towards the serving table, collecting himself a plate. He’s not shy at all and asks Malin, “You want me to make you plate as I make one for myself?” To Obadiah he adds, “Can’t wait to try the ribeye or the turkey, this look fantastic!”
Nodding in agreement with what Helen says to Eirwen, Malin says, “Yes, we barely do run into each other these days.” As Matthew is presented name-wise, she laughs helplessly. “Moothew shall live on forever. When our baby is born, maybe it’ll need a little cow costume, too.” Next, she’s giving a nod to Matthew about sharing a plate. “Sure.”
“Cow onesie needs to happen,” Chance agrees as he wanders over to the tables to get in line to grab a plate, hanging back a little to let others grab something before he slips in and starts serving himself.
Obadiah looks between Chance and Matthew and half scolds the both of them but there is a humor in his eyes, “Which side of the family was responsible for keeping tabs on Arachne, hmm? I am sure she would have loved to be here.” He makes his way over to the buffet and starts to dish up himself, he doesn’t care, he is here to get fat.
Liri taps idly at her phone, not particularly pushing herself onto anyone to chat with, dark circles under her eyes obvious.
“Sure as hell wasn’t me,” Chance laughs. “She hasn’t spoken to me since I got to town. I tried to get Dovie to come but I think she’s out of town in Boston again.”
“Good to see you,” Jasper says, smiling before he moves to walk towards the table. He grabs a plan and turns to browse the food, filling his plate along the way.
Matthew is definitely not sharing ap late, but he’ll make two, mostly because he wants to make one and who eats before their baby mama? Not that Montrose. He starts serving up the plates, “Oh, Arachne definitely in the charge of the Fairchilds,” he claims, glancing at Chance, “You should’ve called her,” gets teased. He then says, “Pretty sure Arachne heard it got cold and went south for the winter.” SHortly after he heads to the table, presenting Malin with a plate, keeping his own in hand.
-REPOST for Eirwen
“Dude, I’m not even on the family group text anymore,” Chance says to Matthew. “Pretty sure they’ve disowned me,” he shrugs with an amused smile, clearly not concerned about it either way. “It’s okay. My favorite Fairchild still loves me. That’s all that matters.” He reaches over to grab some turkey and taters with gravy.
Obadiah takes a breath and lets it out then, thinking about that revelation and then says, “That tracks,” before glancing to Chance, “Oh the group texts all went wonky. The Mercer one got corrupted along with the Arachne’s court one.” He purses his lips, “I might have to leave her service soo.”
“Who’s your favorite?” Liri wonders of Chance, padding over, picking at food more than anything, her plate half empty.
“Moothew?” Eirwen asks, looking amused for a moment between Helen and Matthew. Then she is giving another nod after peering at the food and replies to Helen. “I would like that very much. What would you recommend? I think I would like some of those meatballs in sauce though.”
Malin nods in full agreement with Chance. “Absolutely,” she says about the cow onesie as she accepts the plate from Matthew.
Chance chuckles and tells Liri, “Dovie. She’s the only one that tolerates me, anyway. Love may be overstating it.” He grabs some of the stuffing to add to his pile, and then some meatballs and lingonberry sauce. He’s going to make his way through a bit of everything one spoon at a time.
Malin snickers at Chance. “I’m sure she loves you,” she insists to the Fairchild.
Malin waves to Jasper, finally noticing he’s here. “Hey, Jasper. How’ve you been since the bonfire night?”
“I’ve only met Albert, and well, now you two,” Liri admits to Chance. “I’ve never been… well… Mercers tend to be the only ones who get along, innately, with Ransoms.” She flips a hand, as though gesturing to Obadiah.
“Dovie? Dovie loves Derek best we all know this,” Obadiah teases Chance taking a bite of something new to try all of the things but Liri’s comment does get a polite nod of his head in approval
“Ah, yes, the People’s Boyfriend,” Malin agrees with Obadiah, head bobbing gently.
“I’ve only spoken to Albert once,” Chance admits to Liri. “And I tend to get along with anyone who doesn’t choose not to get along with me first.” He grins over at Malin and then nods in Obadiah’s direction. “See? Second family-fiddle at best. I’ve never even met him or heard from him for that matter, but I hear he’s busy with school.”
Matthew forks up some turkey and dressing, eyes drifting closed as he savors this classic blend with a few nods. The man’s died and gone to heaven, very content to be eating all this good food, rendered speechless and no longer even aware that conversation is happening. Food? Yes, please. He goes in for more.
“Mmmmmm!” Matthew is pointing at his plate and the prime rib, clearly trying to convey something positive about it before he’s pointing the business end of a fork at Obadiah. “You made both these, Obie?”
“It’s been alright so far,” Jasper tells Malin. “Some planning, studying, and a bit of hunting.” Hearing the other conversations, Jasper murmurs, “I miss Derek,” before he eats his food.
“Yes, Moothew. I wrangled him one day, can show you my lasso and rope work sometime,” Helen says to Eirwen as she looks back towards the food again. She moves to take a plate and starts to put some meatballs in sauce on it, “And some of the turkey, that is for nap time afterwards, it is important and some mashed potatoes?” She starts scooping some of those and the turkey onto the plate as well.
Liri clearly intended to say something to Chance, about their family lines, perhaps, but then she’s nibbling at her slice of prime rib, a contented little vaguely inappropriate sound coming. She goes back for seconds, agreeing with Matthew, conversation is for those who have not had a bite.
Malin smiles over at Chance. “You’d like Derek. Buck Ransom was telling people Derek and I were dating, but… he’s very much not into women, and I was never into him like that. The man is a pun-using genius, though.” As she shifts her attention to Jasper, “That’s good. Keeping yourself busy.”
Jasper nods towards Malin before he looks at the floor. “This looks like we’re standing on water.”
“He is a true Fairchild. He and Dovie were once confused over the price of milk,” Obadiah says as he looks at the meatballs and picks up one to nom on before quipping to Jasper, “It’s one of my favorite places in the city.”
“I am sure your ropework is very good,” Eirwen quips back at Helen, looking amused. While Helen dishes up food her gaze drifts over the others here, but she doesn’t seem to quite be following all the founding families talk or the names being through around. So she asks Helen. “Why is turkey important for nap time?”
Liri beams over at Preston when he comes in, waving from beside someone.
Chance nods to Malin and says, “I’ve been told I’d like him. Maybe someday if he comes up for air from his studies we’ll get a chance to hang out. I do appreciate a good pun.” Squinting over at Obadiah and asks, “Confused over the price of milk?”
A bit late, does Preston walk in carrying a tray of clearly fresh rolls.
Liri beams over at Preston when he comes in, waving from beside Chance.
“It has a chemical in it that can make you sleepy,” Helen says to Eirwen as she walks to a spot with the woman now to enjoy the food, getting some utensils and smiling, “Enjoy! Everyone eventually feels like taking a nap after eating so much.”
“Good evening, Preston,” Malin greets Preston, and then she waves as Jakem arrives. “Hello, Jakem.” In response to Chance, the Swede tells him, “I think you two would get along great and laugh a lot together.”
“It does seem fitting,” Jasper tells Obadiah with a grin, plucking a rib from his plate to bite into it.
“Yay! Rolls!” Obadiah says with a grin,” Obadiah says with a smirk then comments to Matthew, “Yes the Turkey and the Prime rib I made.”
Jakem nods to Chance as he approaches the floor “Indeed, like two peas in a bunker.” he chimes in with a wave to Malin.
“Oh, damn, that’s good,” Chance says when he tries a bit of the prime rib. “Never had prime rib for thanksigiving before but that is some very, very good prime rib.” He might be back for more of that later. He lifts his fork and gives a wave to Jakem and Preston as they arrive. “Evenin’. Welcome to the feast of Gluttony and Sloth. First we feast. Then we nap.”
Malin asks Jakem, “Isn’t that just like a bathroom with two urinals?” curiously.
“It’s the BEST prime rib,” Liri compliments Obadiah, taking far more than a tiny thing her size should eat.
Jakem raises a brow at Chance “You’re gonna nap here? Do you have rope to tie up Malin with first, or are we just sacrificing our wallets to the festivity spirits?”
“Why would we be sacrificing me? I’m not a virgin anymore,” Malin says in a dramatic tone to Jakem.
Jakem shrugs to Malin “Wouldn’t know; I find gender conventions on bathrooms to be opressive.”
“Well, I’d planned on at least reaching a couch before I nap but I’m not gonna judge where anyone else wants to pass out,” Chance chuckles. Then he leans toward Malin and says, “I think the implication was that you’d be stealing the wallets of the drowsy.”
Jakem shakes his head to Malin “Nah, if we don’t tie you up before napping, we’ll be sacrificing our wallets. Keep up”
“Well, why would there be two peeing in a bunker without there being a bathroom?” Malin asks Jakem, clearly misunderstanding. As Chance leans towards her, she goes, “Ohhhh.”
Malin stands there looking a bit puzzled, however. “Wait, what? I throw people in my trunk, I don’t steal their wallets.” She glances down at her growing belly and swears, “This isn’t the result of shop lifting and shoving things up my shirt to sneak them out.”
Jakem shrugs to Malin “Unless by peeing you mean peeling peas, I think you’ve got the wrong homophone.”
Having just arrived back with the crowd after her phone call, Teagan makes her way up to Obadiah and takes his hand. Or if both are occupied; just tucks her hand into the crook of his elbow. She gives him a brief smirk, looking around at- “I missed a lot of arrivals,” she murmurs, mildly surprised.
“Pees,” Malin repeats the wrong word, lashes fluttering as she tries to work this out, but it just seems far to difficult as she stares at someone.
“Pees,” Malin repeats the wrong word, lashes fluttering as she tries to work this out, but it just seems far to difficult as she stares at Jakem.
Eirwen tilts her head to one side, asking Malin. “Why do you throw people in your trunk?”
“Rolls is right!” Preston declares, placing them down. “Sorry, I’m late,” he mentions easily, rubbing idly at his face, frowning a bit. There’s a smile for Liri though, and a wave at her. “Hey, Liri!”
Jakem hmms to Eirwen “So if you drop ’em in, they hit the side and kinda roll. Which would be fine, but sometimes not quite all of them roll in, which creates problems when you wanna close the trunk.”
“She’s a compulsive kidnapper,” Chance says to Eirwen. “So compulsive she had to make her own.”
“See? I DO own real clothes,” Liri says to Preston, sticking her tongue out like the brattiest brat. “Who cares if I just bought this shirt today…”
“I’m sure you did,” Preston casually mentions to Liri, plucking up a roll, and not even buttering it does he just begin to tear into it.
An opportunity has arisen through an invitation via Eirwen and Malin is right on it. Broadly, she grins at the recently met young woman. This Swede looks to be about twenty-six, so maybe she’s young too. But there’s Chance trying to give a reason, and she has to wave him off dismissively. “No, no, that’s not why,” she’s claiming, looking back to Eirwen. “When certain people do not get the hint that I am not interested in them in that way, and they keep hitting on me, I invite them outside to my car, and they think they are going to go home with me. Instead, I knock them out, tie them up, toss them in the trunk, and then drive around looking for potholes to run over.”
Obadiah takes Teagan’s hand in his and with his free hand waves to Jakem before going in for another bite from his plate of food. A roll this time since that is what he asked Preston to bring
“You better at least try some of my actual cooking,” Liri tells Preston, threateningly pointing a fork at him, unthreateningly. “I made mash, and mash, and, um, gravy.”
Jakem shakes his head at Malin’s response “So weird. Why can’t you just kidnap people for normal reasons?”
“She doesn’t even offer them a drink from the complimentary bar station inside of the trunk, either,” Helen says in addition to Malin’s story as she continues to eat nibbles here and there of the plate she has made of the food. She laughs softly and looks towards Eirwen, “And there are a lot of potholes in this city.”
Teagan is looking over the food, but does overhear Jakem and chimes in: “Yeah, like weddings. Weddings are a great reason to kidnap people.”
Jakem nods approvingly to Teagan “Weddings and… Whatever that thing that happened with the one we got for Helen.”
Malin continues to explain to Eirwen about her trunk, “But the trunk is quite glorious. It’s been upholstered in velvet and I keep fine wines and chocolates back there, so sometimes friends ask to get into the trunk, too.” But Helen is already sharing that fact! and she grins more. Her tongue clucks against the roof of her mouth over towards Jakem and she stresses, “Because I’m not normal.” Which is a truth.
Liri crinkles her nose at Teagan, saying to her, “Poor, sweet Owen. That boy has enough issues without two wolves annoying him.”
Eirwen picks up a fork, helping herself to one of the meatballs on her and Helen’s shared plate while she listens to Malin’s explanation, along with everyone else’s. “I see,” the girl murmurs after a little nibble. “I guess that is one way to leave them bruised and remembering not to try again.” Another nibble and she adds, “Though I can see why men would keep trying. You are very pretty.”
“Mash and mash?” Preston wonders of Liri, listening to Teagan and Liri chat for a moment, “I don’t know if I’m all that hungry,” he explains, frowning a bit, but, he does wander to the food, sniffing it. There’s an almost anger about him, just simmering underneath the surface.
Jakem blinks at Liri “Two wolves? Did Mercy like start lending out her husband or something?”
Matthew ccomes out of his food trance, his plate’s been cleared and now he’s going up for seconds like a rebel at fat camp. When he plops down it’s beside Chance, leaning in to tell the Fairchild, “The stuffing is definitely some of the best I’ve had,” he’s helped himself to more of it as evidence, “You said this was the recipe growing up at your house?”
Teagan opts eventually to just steal bits of food off of Obadiah’s plate. It’s the easiest option for now. And surely he won’t notice. Not even when her mouth is full.
“Well, thank you,” Malin coos out to Eirwen. “Sometimes they do try for a second round… but then they learn. I think I’m too much for most people to handle, so it’s best that I nip it in the bud like that.”
“He’s one of my best friends,” Liri says to Jakem, squinting as she speaks. “Did you all do zero research on the man you kidnapped?”
Chance chuckles when Malin waves him off and explains the true reason for her kidnappings, returning his attention to his food for the time being. He has sampled nearly everything on the table by this point, so now it’s time to go back in for a full helping of his favorites. Then he settles in for a moment. Grinning at Matthew he nods, “Yeah. My dad’s recipe. He was always the one who did the Thanksgiving cooking and Christmas. Those were his two big cooking meals. Mom did the rest of the year.”
Obadiah does notice but likes sharing food and doesn’t seem at all bothered by Teagan stealing off of his plate. Next he picks at the two different types of mashed potatoes as he lets to conversation ebb and flow around him eventually asking, no one in particular, “What do you think Alex and Jordan will say about this event?”
Jakem tilts his head, looking to Liri “I mean most of the people we kidnap are just incidental. So technically learning his name first was the most research we’d ever done.”
“Hopefully, that our cooking is awesome,” Liri says to Obadiah, a wink, a flash of a crooked grin, then a shrug. “It shows a contentment of the town amongst each other,” a hand falling to Preston’s back, as though to soothe.
Matthew calls to Liri, “Yo, the mash is good!” He listens as Chance elaborates, nodding, forking up more, “Oh so this is actually a Fairchild recipe?” There’re a few nods before it’s admitted, “I don’t think any Montroses cook, they just hire the cooks, but my mama definitely cooked a lot.” His fork gets angled towards Malin, “SHe’s coming to Atlanta with me for Thanksgiving this year, gonna see the chaos that is the Johnson family when there’re like thirty or forty of us all under one roof!”
Chance glances over toward Obadiah and says, “They will say the food was so good that the fish beneath us felt taunted that they didn’t get any. A rousing success.”
Helen munches on the various options on her shared plate with Eirwen. She nods in agreement, “Malin is quite lovely. She is also a lot, but I think it is nice. You’re never really bored around her or Matthew.” She does place her fork down, and now lays her hand gently behind Eirwen, leaning into the other woman somewhat, “I’ve not actually seen the inside of her trunk though, but I’ve heard some of the wine vintages are to die for.”
Matthew nods agreement with Chance, “Yeah, for real, you did super good on the mains.”
Malin nods in agreement as Matthew declares she will be meeting his family this Thanksgiving. “The trouble Matthew and I used to get into, until I found out I was pregnant… then I became boring,” she says towards Helen.
“You are welcome,” Eirwen replies to Malin with a small smile, picking some of the turkey from Helen’s plate now and tells her, “Perhaps you just need to ask her very prettily. And do you like wines? I am not very familiar with the ones here.” The hand at her back has her leaning into it subtly while she tries to dip turkey slide in the berry sauce.
“Or,” Teagan says to Chance as she steals more food off of Obadiah’s plate. Now she’s just taking his fork when he’s hot holding it. So bold! “That the fish will feel offended they weren’t part of it.” Another glance to her phone briefly and a frown. At least she doesn’t leave this time. No, she just mutters about coats.
Liri gives a lazy grin to Matthew, saying, “Thanks, it’s my own recipes, well… The garlic mash is a recipe from ages and ages ago that has been tweaked by family. Ransoms are big on eating what we can produce ourselves.”
“Yeah, my dad’s the one who taught me to cook. His dad was a chef,” Chance says to Matthew. “We didn’t actually have a chef growing up. Cleaners, yeah. A driver sometimes. But I do actually know how much milk costs and how to do my own laundry.” It’s said with a crooked smile. “I dunno, I’m pretty sure the fish are glad not to be that much of a part of it…” he laughs to Teagan.
“I hope they say something about how in the darkness of the Legion retaining control of Fairefield, the various groups, the court, Wonder, the Order, the Sons, were able to set aside whatever squabbles they had to break bread and watch the fishies,” Obadiah says with a firm nod, deciding that is the best possible outcome for everyone
Helen slips her hand lightly under Eirwen’s coat, to rub at her back gently while she chuckles softly and says to Malin, “I imagine your boring is probably still more exciting than average…” She looks aside to Eirwen, “I like experiences, and sometimes a good wine is an experience, especially if it is something rare and coveted. I actually do not drink all that much, which is sometimes a surprise to people. My addictions are getting obsessed over a project and focusing too hard on something specific, usually.”
Chance salutes Obadiah with his plate and says, “Here, here!”
Matthew frowns thoughtfully, giving Liri a nod, “I believe it,” is decided while he look son over at Helen. He smiles bright her way, beaming warmth, “So Helen, you getting a little bit of a break from all the work travel?”
“Plus, look at all the families represented here, and Matt hasn’t called me a dog once,” Liri says, voice holding a giggle, adding onto Obadiah’s sweet ideal.
“Yes, I’ve been back for a little while and trying to be more social. Though, I might have to go here again soon? I’m not sure, waiting on the call,” Helen says to Matthew with a smile over in his direction, “But it has been nice to have some time and meet some new people, like Eirwen, here.” She nudges lightly into the woman beside her, “I try to get out more as well, working on a few projects, will have to see if time permits.”
Jakem nods to Liri “Dawg went out of vogue almost a decade ago as nomenclature, I believe.” he says, scratching his stubble wisely. “You’ll have to wait until it comes back to popular vernacular.”
As Preston scoops some someone potatoes on his plate, he’s carrying it around, mostly hanging off to himself on the side of the crowd of Friendsgiving attenders. A permanent scowl plastered on his face, really, but he does eat some of the potatoes, nodding at Liri. “They’re good,” he informs her, easily.
Teagan leans against Obadiah, leaving his plate un-thiefed for a few moments while she texts. She chews on her lower lip as she does, squinting toward the various serving dishes and bowls every so often.

A permanent scowl plastered on his face, really, but he does eat some of the potatoes, nodding at Liri. “They’re good,” he informs her, easily.
Eirwen smiles at Helen, “I can definitely see you getting obsessed over your projects. Both inside and outside the forge.”
“My boring is maybe a bit exciting, still, but there aren’t any dangerous stunts, you know? I have to think about keeping myself alive now,” Malin says this, pairing it with a little pout. “Oh well.”
Obadiah looks over to Teagan and narrows his eyes briefly as she starts to text, “Everything ok?” He looks over to everyone else and nods, “Helen has been a help on projects in the past with Esme I think.” He nods to Liri, “Not all ransoms are dogs.”
“The only Ransoms that are dogs are the skirt chasers,” Liri says, eyes on her phone, not her empty plate.
Malin notes after Obadiah’s words, “But it does smell like dog in here,” albeit quietly as her nose twitches a little.
“Mmhmm,” Teagan says to Obadiah, but does tilt her head in toward him to murmur something.
Matthew nods in support of what Eirwen says, “What’s the latest project?” While he awaits his answer he leans in towards Malin, adding, “These meatballs are super good. Been waiting to eat them since you cooked them.”
Malin provides Matthew with an approving thumbs up.
Chance takes a few more bites from his plate, listening to the conversations going on around him and seeming content to focus on the food and just observing for a little bit.
“Helen is teaching me how to forge,” Eirwen says to Matthew, “Though I am not sure if that counts so much as a project.”
Obadiah visibly relaxes at the whisper from Teagan. “Oh right yes well if I need to pay for it I can.” He eats another bite of potatoes and adds, mouth still full, “Mercer’s aren’t poor.”
Malin does a double take Obadiah’s way over his last comment.
“This is one of them,” Helen says in agreement with Eirwen, “And I have another one I am working on which involves a shield mounting to a motorcycle front. It should be deployable and retractable, but it is taking a while, keep being distracted!”
Chance glances over toward Helen at the mention of the motorcycle-mounted shield. “That sounds pretty cool. I kinda want a motorcycle so it can have a mounted shield now.”
There’s a quiet scoff from Teagan as she glances up at Obadiah. “I think I can take care of this one myself.” In retaliation (or just because they do look good) she steals his fork to try some of the mashed potatoes.
A faint blush creeps up into Eirwen’s cheeks and she gives Helen a fond look before picking up another meatball on her fork to nibble on and looking down at the ground.
Matthew and Malin whisper to one another, he nodding in agreement as he glances over the table at the attending guests. “That’s great you’re learning,” he says to Eirwen, “and a motorcycle with a shield does sound cool, my knight definitely should have one of those,” towards Chance.
“With a lance. So I can practice motorcycle jousting,” Chance adds with a grin over at Matthew. Nothing could possibly go wrong there.
Matthew upnods Jakem, some how having missed the man’s entry, “Oh, hey man, good to see you!” He laughs about jousting, nodding at Chance, “You think you can do stunts and stuff?”
“Absolutely not, but that’s never stopped me before,” Chance grins.
Obadiah lets the fork be stolen, acquiescing to Teagan’s food theft with a chuckle before saying, “As you wish. I am not going to say anything.”
Helen tilts her head to lean into Eirwen’s shoulder as she says to Matthew and Chance, “You could always test it out for me sometime if I ever get a proper working one going. I want to be able to basically mount it to most forks and fronts on a motorcycle, but getting stability down while blocking things and not losing control is difficult…” She looks up to Eirwen and smiles at the woman’s reaction, “Hey, you’re learning as well. I need help to finish these things!”
Liri snags another bite of the prime rib before she makes an irish goodbye.
Teagan happily tries the mashed potatoes… and then a few other things on Obadiah’s plate because in the way of all girlfriends: she wasn’t hungry until she could steal from him. Or really she just didn’t feel like going to make a plate after her earlier call. “Better not, you already did plenty.” There is a thoughtful look around. “Maybe we should have gotten some chairs delivered or something.”
“I’d be game to give it a shot,” Chance says to Helen with a nod as he finishes off the food on his plate and sets it to the side wherever they go. “Let me know when you’re ready to give it a try.”
“And I’d love to watch,” Matthew tosses out to Helen, nodding between Chance and Eirwen. “I enjoy a little Evel Knievel action from time to time!”
Obadiah looks over his phone when it buzzes. What is on it gets him a wry grin and he slides his phone back away into his vest pocket before asking the group, “So what is everyone going for the Holidays? Anyone going anywhere interesting?”
Jakem looks up to Obadiah “I’ll probably throw a holiday shindig or something.” He comments idly. “Not sure for which one.” He nods to Mercy.
Malin gives a wave to Mercy as she arrives, but then her nose just twitches a little more.
Matthew upnods Mercy as he scoops up another bit of mash.
Mercy throws an upnod here and there to those greeting her first, then whisks off her winter jacket with dramatic flair before tossing it to Teagan.
Eirwen glances at Helen as she shes into her, steady and happy to take the other woman’s weight. When Matthew glances between her and Chance, the girl looks at the latter then back to Matthew. “I do not know how to drive so it will have to be Helen and Chance who can test it.” With her free hand she snakes her arm around Helen’s back and gives her a small squeeze. “Perhaps Matthew can come and watch us work some time?” she asks the other blonde.
“Did you not see my other text?” Teagan asks Mercy as she arrives. The coat is taken and tucked over her arm, cradled against the side not currently occupied by… well, leaning against Obadiah’s side.
“I think I’m just going to chill here this year, to be honest,” Chance says. “My folks are traveling this holiday season so I’ll probably visit with them afterward. If there’s stuff going on around town, I’ll probably drop in on that.”
Mercy attempts to semi-integrate into the herd and also get to the tables where all the food is, ticking a brow up at Teagan and glancing down at her phone.
Mercy starts setting out some booze on the table, which for her, is as generous as one can possibly get. She also starts to set out a bag of hot cheetos, but reconsiders that one.
Mercy says “Hmm.. hol’ up.“
Mercy says “Aigh’ yeah that’s it sadly fer now.“
Mercy says “Ooouu thas’ good..“
Matthew look at Mercy for some time then asks, “Wait… were you ’bout to contribute car food?” He seems genuinely shocked, but should he be?
Jakem tsks to Matthew “Your food was in a car too, several cars probably.” he chides.
“Matthew could certainly come and watch us work sometime, and I think it would be chance or myself testing it,” Helen says to Eirwen as she does let the other woman take some of her weight. She looks content now to watch and observe the others, listening but she does wave towards Mercy.
Malin has her head bobbing in response to what Teagan has said to Mercy. “And chocolates. Good ones and bad ones.”
Mercy glances up from her phone to Matthew, then with a tilt of her head takes a few slow yet deliberate steps towards him. “Ayeah, was. That a problem?”
Teagan blinks at Mercy and just barely manages to turn her head into Obadiah’s shoulder to… cough, yes, that’s it. She’s totally not laughing. Nope.
Jakem hmmms to Malin “What defines a bad chocolate?”
Exhaling out a sigh, Malin says to Mercy, “My car is at home. Matthew drove me in his.”
“Its got a wrapper-sheet a mile long,” Helen says to Jakem.
“What is inside of them,” Malin says to Jakem matter-of-factly. “I’ll let you try some sometime and you can figure it out.”
Chance snickers.
Malin snickers at Helen’s answer.
Mercy tsks at Malin with a suck of her teeth. “Passenger princess.”
“Guilty,” Malin says to Mercy whilst preening.
“You’re a passenger princess aren’t you,” Obadiah looks at Teagan with suspicion but there is humor in his eyes still too. “That’s alright, I drive the MM.”
Jakem nods to Malin “Sure, then you can try some of mine.” he comments, glancing at her belly “Kinda wondering how the kid’ll like ’em>”
Eirwen tries to edge towards the table without causing Helen to become unbalanced from her lean. She swiped a cup of the cranberry soda and takes a small sip to test it before offering a sip to Helen in turn. “What is a passenger princess?”
Mercy’s intimidation methods might work on Matthew except they don’t right now. Instead the Montrose lifts up a slab of prime rib, danging it up like some kind of doggy treat. “Not a problem, also not surprised,” he says before asking, “You want?” And he might actually toss it towards her to catch.
It’s a quiet, stewing night from Preston. Seething in the corner as he snacks on something. His previous conversation partner has gone for an irish goodbye, and Preston just hangs out, perhaps out of a sense of duty or something.
Jakem scratches his chin, pontificating to Eirwen “Sounds kinda like a backseat driver, but more regal. Or judgy.”
Looking up at Obadiah, Teagan blinks slowly. She tries to keep a straight face as she leans in and whispers something to him. She succeeds. Marginally. For about two seconds. And then there’s a big grin as she settles back on her heels and asks, louder (perhaps trying to distract from the brewing ire in some corners): “Who brought dessert?”
Helen leans with Eirwen now and stands up a little straighter. She looks towards the offered drink and lifts it up to take a sip of it as well, “That is pretty good.” She smacks her lips briefly before saying, “I believe it means someone who rides in the passenger seat and gets to enjoy the view without worrying about driving, but I could be wrong.”
Obadiah looks over at Preston, stoping his laughter for a moment and says to him, “I saw you here, proof enough you came out tonight. If you want to go home I won’t fault you.”
“Passenger princesses are basically just,” Preston nods towards Helen, “Yeah, that. They enjoy having someone else do the work of the driving them around.” A little shrug towards Obadiah, “Yeah, sorry, I’m not in a very good mood.”
Malin wets her lips via the quick swipe of her tongue between them as she listens to Jakem. “I’ve had your chocolates before, sir,” she reminds him. “And I’m very, very careful as to what I will eat currently.”
Mercy witnesses this attempt at goading by Matthew with a blank expression, at first. After she pockets her phone to free up that hand and glances back up at him, it’s with sharper eyes and a thin smile that doesn’t remotely reach them. “Yer so much more considerate when we got all our mutual friends an’ acquaintances ’round us, appreciate that ’bout you. Could always step outside an’ enjoy that slab jus’ you an’ me though.”
“I’ve been driving a car for…” Malin considers the math through a twitch of her fingers, one after the other. “Sixty something years. Sometimes it’s nice to be the passenger.”
Eirwen ahs softly, nodding her head at the explanations. “I cannot drive so I guess that makes me a passenger princess also.” She gently takes the cup of Soda back from Helen to have another sip from it and agrees, “It is good.”
ObadiahTeagan’ whispered response gets a snort and a cough and then he bobs his head excitedly and repeatedly. “Yes that mhmm of course.”
Jakem hmms, looking to Mercy to educatify her “While that may make it sound like Malin is pushing 80 years old, in fact she’s cheated the system of measurement by driving multiple cars at once, similar to those old rocketskates people used to wear back into the 2110’s. This allows her to drive multiple years worth of cars in the same year.”
Mercy shoots Jakem a look like she’s under the assumption he thinks she’s dumber than she is.
“I could teach you how to drive,” Malin insists to Eirwen. “It’s easy. You just need a foot, a hand, an eye. And a good soundtrack.”
Matthew reconsiders actually tossing the strip of steak at Mercy and instead chomps it down for himself, laughing at the offer she’s made. “No need, wouldn’t want to leave the party just yet, but for real you should try that prime rib, it’s good!”
“I believe it does,” Helen says to Eirwen with a soft chuckle as she looks back towards the table, but decides not to grab more just for now. She looks to Eirwen, “I might have to head back in a little bit, have a conference call coming up.”
“I am eighty,” Malin says to Jakem, relaying, “But you would have known that had you attended my birthday party at the bowling alley in September.”
Having finished off his meal and starting to feel the effect of the sleepies, Chance begins to make his way out. “Obie, this was great and a fantastic idea. Thanks so much for hosting.” He then waves to everyone else. “Good to see everybody, and to meet you, Eirwen.”
Matthew waves at Chance, “Later,” he calls that way.
“Good to see you, Chance,” Teagan says with a wave of her phone after the man. She then reads the text that came in, slowly tapping out a reply.
Jakem nods to Malin with a crooked smile “I too am 80. In that I try to throw about four birthdays a year for myself.”
Eirwen nods at Malin. “I may take you up on that.” Then she gives Helen a small squeeze. “I need to go as well. I will walk you out.”
Preston scans the food, “Oh,” comes his reply, a little grunted reply. “There’s no pie.”
Mercy holds Matthew in her stare long enough for it to definitely go well beyond socially acceptable, as if she’s waiting to glimpse the smallest sign of weakness before charging. A thoughtful glance is thrown to Teagan, however, and she seems to think better of it. For now. “Fixin’ to soon enough, everythin’ looks good honestly.”
“Pie would have been good, but this is all great,” Jasper admits.
“It was nice to see everyone, thank you for hosting!” Helen calls out to Obadiah, waving towards all those nearby. She offers an arm to Eirwen, “Yes, please do walk me out.”
As if that was a non-selling point for Preston, he turns and begins to march off, throwing a wave towards everyone. “Thanks for hosting, Obie!” Pausing, he smiles at the rest of the crowd. “And, nice to see you people!”
Eirwen says “Thank you for the lovely party. “
Jakem lifts a hand to wave “See yah Helen.”
Mercy says “Who’s the chick with Helen?“
Teagan gets out waves in lieu of belated, shouted greetings after those who have left, tapping out messages. “Eirwen. I think she’s Helen’s girlfriend.”
Jakem whistles softly to Teagan “How long has that been going?”
Mercy begins browsing the food offerings some more, brows raised. “Huh, ain’ know she existed.”
Jakem nods to Mercy “Need to pay better attention. Elsewise there might be people in Haven who’s name you don’t know. Like Greg at the corner store. Or Angy Katem from Accounting.”
Teagan directs a shrug Jakem’s way, “No idea. Helen just told me she has a girlfriend yesterday. I’d guess… sometime within the past week? She did say Eirwen is new in town.” She glances to her phone, then up to Jakem again: “Or that Mekaj guy. I hate him.”
Obadiah looks to Teagan and Jakem, “News to me. I thought she was still dating Eva. Eirwen has been around a couple of weeks. Orderite.” He nods to the group then back to Teagan with a knowing smirk
Mercy rolls her eyes at Jakem, so far back they briefly disappear into her skull. “More meant I ain’ never seen them -together- before, an’ jus’ saw that chick earlier at the raid.”
Mercy says “Ugh, everybody joinin’ the Order.“
Jakem hmmm’s to Teagan “Mekaj, my nemisis.”
Jakem looks to Obadiah with a laugh “You’re terrible at gossip. Helen and Eva haven’t been together in over a month.” He looks to Teagan “Do you just not gossip with him?”
“Oh, I told him,” Teagan says to Jakem. “But I showed him a video not long after that I think short-circuited his brain so… He might’ve forgotten.” There is a flash of a smirk toward Obadiah.
Jakem nods to Teagan “Oh, can I see it? It doesn’t involve a snake woman does it?” he asks nosily.
Mercy cranes her neck to try and eavesdrop more on the conversation between Jakem and Teagan now that she has a plate of assorted meals in-hand.
“What will those crazy penguins do next!” Obadiah says with a shake of his head and far away grin. “The look on her, their, faces.”
Matthew checks his watch and then says to Malin, “I should probably get going,” he admits to her, “have another podcast.”
There’s an absent wave of Teagan’s hand (well, the phone in her hand) at Jakem. “Just some daa-” But Obadiah has filled in instead and she coughs briefly, giving a slight tug to her coat. “Penguins. He really loves penguin videos. Almost as much as cat videos.”
Obadiah nods in agreement with Teagan. “Love me some Orange cat videos. Every orange cat needs their black cat. I am pretty sure Ambrose is the black cat.” He tilts his eyes to Teagan slightly, considering her, then back to Jakem, “Do you like cat videos, Jakem?”
Malin nods to Matthew, “All right. I’m ready when you are.”
Jakem squints at Obadiah “Don’t be lewd.” He thinks for a moment “Nah, I’m just kidding. If it’s orange, yeah I love ’em.”
Malin looks to Obadiah and says, “Thank you so much for hosting. It was great.”
Matthew nods and gives Obadiah a nods, “Yes, thank you for hosting, it was great.” Everyone else earns a wave and then he’s off with Malin.
Mercy watches the couple leave and remarks aloud to those nearest her, mouth full of half-chewed prime rib. “One of these days m’jus’ gonna attack him outright an’ I do apologize fer that if it’s anywhere near y’all.”
Jakem smirks to Mercy “It’s always that sorta party.” he thinks for a moment, glancing to Teagan “You know I was trying to lure Matt out to give to the snake lady.”
Jakem says “Timing didn’t work out though.“
Mercy turns to Teagan after that though, leaning in curiously. “What -did- happen with that snake lady anyhow?”
“Well. I think I might make a head start on walking some of this off,” not that Teagan ate terribly much, but she ate enough. “and head home to prepare some dessert for Obie.” There is a glance to the man, eyebrows lifting. She hesitates at what Jakem says and just shakes her head. “Past is the past.” And like T Swift tells us: she shakes it off.
Jakem snickers softly “Teagan was a present for the gods apparently.”
“Nothing I want to talk about,” Teagan answers Mercy, stiffly, and definitely disengages from Obadiah to start walking for the door.
Mercy just blinks a few times when the other girl leaves, then furrows her brow. “It somethin’ I said?”
Jakem shakes his head to Mercy “Huh, oh nah, I think she hit her maximum party time. She’s been here longer than either of us.”
Mercy holds her palms up. “Fair, know the feelin’. Guess I’ll grab ah.. jus’ a -few- leftovers an’.. be on my way..” She says while creeping back towards the table, surely not going to take half the food.
Obadiah shakes his head at something then waits for a couple of minutes, “I should head soon myself. Please stay and enjoy ourselves though, eat all the food, feed the fishes all that stuff.”
Jakem nods, waving to Obadiah “Taking off too. Enjoy the night.”
Mercy says “Ain’ gonna feed the fish this food, the fuck.“
Jakem says “Everyone feeds the fishes eventually.“
Mercy shrugs and keeps eating.
Mercy scoops a few rolls into her jacket.
Mercy plays it cool by throwing a wave up to Obadiah. “Thanks fer dinner Oobie, have a good night an’ all that.”
Obadiah waves to Jasper and Mercy, “Happy Thanksgiving”
Mercy says “Likewise. “
