Vampire

Vampire Mechanics

Vampires have existed as long as anyone can remember, there are many theories about their creation ranging from that they are a type of demon themselves to that they are cursed souls.

Vampires are immortal, they do not age, they are also powered by blood, their muscles and bodies do not work in the same way as humans, their heart does not beat yet their blood suffuses their entire form, almost sentient as it works their body for them. To maintain this however, they have to feed, drawing blood from humans normally once or twice a week. Weakened by the daylight, they are a nocturnal creature.

Vampire Feeding

Most vampires feed from humans about once or twice a week depending on activity levels, a vampire who's very active, fighting a lot etc will have to feed likely about twice as much, while very slothful vampires can get away with feeding significantly less. Most vampires feed by using their innate ability to place humans into a trance state with a look, then draw about a pint of blood before using a small amount of their own to heal the wound so it never was. The human is left with no memory of the incident, feeling as if they just had a sudden sense of vertigo.

Most vampires will kill about one person a year from feeding, this they do not do generally on purpose but sometimes a human with a weak heart, high level of blood toxicity, very thin blood or even ones who've lost blood recently will die from the process. Some vampires are extremely careful in who they pick, but the randomness of the feeding complications means no degree of preparation is entirely successful, every vampire who feeds on humans will kill.

Vampires can survive on blood not taken directly from a vein or from animal blood, but they need more of it and it leaves them feeling weaker, and generally leads to them looking quite unhealthy as well. These vampires are looked down upon by the majority of the community.

Vampires and turning

New vampires are made by a human first being fed upon, then being fed vampiric blood. The victim dies, and then returns to life as a vampire shortly afterwards.

Vampires and death

Vampires die if they take enough physical damage, this causes them to disintegrate into ash.

Vampires and Daylight

Contrary to popular mythology, vampires do not combust in daylight. They do however find it extremely unpleasant, the sunlight is far too bright, making them near blind without protection, it also burns their skin similar to a sunburn but much quicker. This is particularly bad at mid day.

Vampires and Mirrors

Vampires do have reflections, but many of them wish they didn't. A vampire's reflection is unnatural, while at first glance it might seem perfectly ordinary anybody who gazes at it for more than a few seconds will start to feel uneasy, watching it for longer causing the feeling to intensify until it will quite literally cause a person to lose their mind until they can look away and recover. This affect happens even to the vampires themselves, causing them to use mirrors very sparingly.

Vampires and Stakes.

A wooden stake through the heart has the effect of inducing a paralysis on the vampire until it is removed.

Vampires and Garlic.

Vampires are not repelled by garlic, but they do find the smell of it very unpleasant.

Vampires and cross/religious symbols.

Vampires are not affectd by any religious symbols, or by holy water.

Vampires and Sleep

Vampires naturally feel the urge to sleep during the day, it comes on much like tiredness as a human and staying up through the whole day is about as difficult for a vampire as staying up all night would be for a human. However if a vampire does stay up all day, the tiredness fades away completely when the sun sets.

Vampires and Fatigue

Lore wise vampires don't get fatigued from physical exertion like humans, they get hungry. Their body works on blood like a car on fuel, the more energy they exert the more hungry they will feel until they top back up.

Vampires and Temperature

Vampires do not produce any body heat, as such they always settle onto the temperature of the area they are in. This process takes several hours though, generally a vampire's body temperature will move to halfway between its base temperature and the room temperature about every hour. Vampires are not always cold to the touch, it depends on the temperature of the room and where they have just been, additionally other forces such as friction can temporarily heat their body or parts of their body.

While generally unaffected by most temperatures vampires will be hurt by heat extreme enough to cook meat, and can start to feel lethargic at extremely low temperatures. A vampire who falls into daysleep in sub zero temperatures will not wake up until the temperature goes back up, as their body literally freezes.

Vampire Physiology

Vampires have some basic echo of their human physiology, extreme enough emotions might cause them to cry for instance, but it's very limited. They can however with force of will reactivate any part of their body for as long as they concentrate on it. Letting their heart beat, or tears fall, or even with enough work for hair and nails to grow. In theory a female vampire could even do this to bear a child, but the difficulty of concentrating non

stop without ever sleeping for nine months effectively makes it impossible. Male vampires can impregnante human women with significantly more ease, although it is still a trial requireing the reactivation of their reproductive organs for several days in a row first and then a biologically successful copulation. The child born this way will be a normal human child. All the vampire's bodily fluids, regardless of if they come from the echo or from them deliberately concentrating are tinged with blood. Reactivating parts of the body however does cause them to age normally, just as humans' do, so over centuries of use vampires can look older than when they were made.

Vampires and Food

Vampires don't need to eat or drink regular food, however they can do so if they wish, they can imbibe fairly small quantities without any real concern. A glass of liquid or a few bites of a meal, however if they want to eat or drink more than that they must either throw it back up later, or reactivate their human digestive system and pass it in the usual human manner.

Vampires and drugs

Vampires are affected by alcohol and other drugs, but not nearly to the same extent as humans, this doesn't hold true if they absorb them by drinking the blood of someone under the influence. If they are affected this way it's just as intense as it would be for a human.

Vampire Blood

Vampire blood is a potent intoxicant when ingested by humans, giving an increase in energy levels, feelings of invulnerability or superiority, and a decrease in the ability to feel pain. It also is a potent aphrodisiac and effective treatment for erectile disfunction. It is currently illegal to sell, but a wide street trade exists. The drug is commonly sold under street names V, Juice, Red, and Hype. The drug is more potent the less time has passed since it was taken from the vampire.

Pure vampire blood also induces a temporary state of heightened suggestibility when taken. This period lassts for about five minutes after ingesting at least a shot glass worth of vampire blood. Instructions or suggestions given during this time permeate the unconcious and are more likely to be followed, these suggestions stay with someone permanently. Repeated use increases the effect with a rule of thumb being that three uses will ingrain any instruction irrevocably. This period of suggestibility does not take hold if the person is already in a hypnotic trance or acting under hypnotic control. Historically used by vampires to create human thralls, today it's more commonly used in military applications or by human trafficers. The effect is well publicised, if exaggerated, by anti drug advertisments and works on all creatures, even other vampires.

Vampire blood is normally taken by party goers, or as a sexual stimulant, recently several cases have come to light of it being used, normally in conjunction with other chemicals, as a date rape drug.

Vampire Psychology

Vampires don't change mentally at all when they are transformed, however after the transformation change is common. Dealing with both being significantly more powerful as well as occasionally killing people causes changes as the new vampire adapts their view to handle their new life. Occasionally some can't and kill themselves but this is rare, most adapt. Some become more callous, others try to balance it out by performing other good deeds, some believe it's their place as natural predators or that they are evil.
