Overview

+What He Was+

Based on available records from Irish Mythology, Cathbad lived about the time Ceaser's legions arrived in Brittain. A leader of a warrior band and a druid, he eventually became an advisor of the high king Conor mac Nessa in Ulster. The misty melding of history and myth grow his story into unverifiable legend, leaving us with few facts and an endless list of possibilities that occasionally touch in the supernatural community across the centuries.

+What He Became+

In 2018 the Dreamscape opened into a Dreamworld that paralleled the famous Gate community of Haven Massachusets (Haven: Holy Grail Wars.) In that place, a competition between arcanists reached across history to summon pawns into the dream to strive. One such was Cathbad, or an instance of Cathbad, or a dream of Cathbad, or an imagining. Or not, for this champion did not wake with a dreamer and was not bound to the Dreamworld. He did not make the trip to Earth, but he did wander from dreamworld to dreamworld, reportedly trying to make sense of what had happened to him, searching and learning.

+What He Is Now+

A mage and learned man in his time, the druid has survived and studied and grown stronger. He is still trapped in the Dreamscape, wandering, seeking a way to gain his life back. Meanwhile, his wanderings to dreamworlds and his contacts with dreamers continue to teach him the ways of the worlds and the miracles of science across the millennia, the facts and legends of history and, of course, the lessons of magic and psychics.

RP Hooks

ø Celtic Origins - From the legends of Ireland, Cathbad is directly linked to history and prehistory. He has memories of other times and lives as well, from the Dreamscape, but his roots are in the oak groves and stone halls of Erin. His memories of this 'real life' are not perfect, but they include flashes of youth and parent that the Dreamscape ones lack. A sense of growing up and building a life, which gives them a special quality.

ø Druid - Cathbad is known as one of the greatest of all druids, at least from way back when. The name mac Darach translates roughly as 'of the oak' and is an appellate he took on himself because some dreamworlds expected a surname. He has walked with the olde Fae, learned wisdom and wielded great magics. What he can manage now is still unknown, but he was once Erin's Merlin and most trusted advisor of the High King. Expect a little arrogance or pride now and again. Maybe even an occasional touch of common sense.

The Druid walks the spiritual path of protecting the natural order of existence. Life and Death are different times on the same journey and he knows that nothing lasts forever. Even Cathbad. Still, healing, protecting and championing are parts of his life and his philosophy. Do not expect prejudice or bandwagon chasing from this man, but if he finds a sick tree or an injured person, he may try to help.

ø Dreamscape - Cathbad was reborn in the dreamscape and lived there exclusively for a long time. Two years in Haven time. Exiled from this corporeal world, or maybe having never really touched it, maybe just a coalescing swirl of psychic mist, he simply is not quite human. Yet, his constant contact with others and his sense of continuity across dreamworlds have also made sure he is not quite a dream.

ø Mage - Cathbad is a druid and they are caretakers of nature, but magic also burns in his very soul, creating a conflict, or maybe a bridge, between the two extremes of this ancient conflict.

ø Warrior - Leader of a war band of fianna, or landless warriors, from a time when armed personal conflict was a common negotiating tool, Cathbad is no stranger to a fight. While he has learned the rules of less blatantly aggressive times, and the lessons of wisdom, do not expect meekness.

Supernatural Outlook

ø It's All Good - Cathbad does not really differential super and normal, or god and mortal, or dream persona versus dreamer. Life takes many forms and all are natural as proved because they exist. He is more likely to be curious than judgmental. The Tuatha de Danaan hold a special place for him, but not because they are Fae so much as because they are part of his heritage.

ø Magic - It is woven into his very being. To Cathbad, magic is natural because it exists. Even more, though, it is "interesting".

ø Psychic Realms - The Dreamscape is part of the natural order, as are all the worlds. And the various psychic changes within that are nurtured by the Dreamscape. The Nightmare is real and the merging and decaying of dream doors is as natural as the merging and decaying of continents.

ø Life Eats Life - From amoebas to gods, contest and predation are natural. Undirected slaughter and madness are ineffective and not typically desired, but sometimes one simply has to thump a hard oaken staff upside a thick head to get a point across. Or to survive. This is a perfectly acceptable part of how life works and Cathbad expects the many cyclic conflicts to continue infinitely for as long as there is life.
