Harriets Ghost Banishing

(Harriet's ghost banishing)

[Wed Jan 10 2024]

On the Sprawling Hillside of Arkwright Cemetery

It is morning, about -13F(-25C) degrees, and there are a few dark grey stormclouds in the sky.

A brisk wind picks ups, blowing into the gaveyard from the ocean. Dark clouds start to gather overhead and with a crack of thunder lightning strikes the gravestone! As an eerie cackling starts to echo through the area a terrible coastal storm starts to lash the graveyard.

The weather was quite tame a moment ago so when the lightening strikes and the clouds sweep in its very jarring and sudden. Jessica goes, "Holy shit!" when the lighting strikes the gravestone with a resounding boom. Within moments the rain drenches her straight through and she's left trying to hide under her book as a poor bit of cover, something she gives up on quickly, "How is it even worse than zombies?!"

"Aaah shit, let me get my umbrella." Ryan says as he puts the rituals book in one of his hands, pulling out an umbrella and opening it, holding it up as he says, "Maybe you can get under this, Jessica, it may help keep the rain off of your book?"

Autumn takes a step back when the lightning strikes the grave. "I've seen this before," she speaks, preparing her hands and holding them out. "Last time it happened, I almost got dragged to sea."

As the area is suddenly hit with the rough winds, Harriet lifts a slender right hand, and she shields her face some, although it does very little to protect her. "Ah," gets exhaled out. "It's an angry one, it seems..." Her voice trails off as she leans forward against the storm, and as lightning strikes so close by she narrows hazel eyes. She seems to agree with Jessica, and is surprised Ryan's umbrella isn't turning into a tool of sorts that can allow him to paraglide. As Autumn explains her previous experience, she asks, "What ended it?" in a hopeful tone.

A fierce howling wind gusts through the graveyard, kicking up sharp branches and brambles that tear at clothes and skin.

Jessica is not too shy to take free shelter and so she huddles up with Ryan under the umbrella. Trying to stay out of the elements the best she can, it doesn't take long to say, "What if we get struck by lightening cause of the umbrella?" Besides with the wind being so strong the rain practically comes horizontally and threatens to steal her book, Ryan's umbrella and maybe even herself considering she doesn't weigh too much.

"My magic and with help from Tabitha and Yasmin," Autumn tells Harriet as she braces herself from the storm and fierce winds. "Ghost probably was seafarer, and we banished it to sea."

"It's okay, I'm wearing rubber soled shoes?" Ryan says as he pulls his jacket closer around him, trying to dodge and swat away the branches and brambles away from him and the group that are kicked up from the storm. "What a mess this is, freak storms, I tell you."

Harriet gives a nod as Jessica brings up the point of Ryan becoming a veritable attraction to the incoming lightning strikes. She listens to Autumn, and she makes a small 'hmm' in response to the methods that were used previously. "I am not skilled in such things, but perhaps you are?" is hoped of Autumn.

Harriet braces herself against the winds, and as twigs and the like hit her, she winces a little. "I should have worn something less expensive..."

The torrential downpour soaks the group, making seeing anything more than a foot in front of them all but impossible.

Jessica is also not quite dressed for the cold, rain and wind, but a miniskirt is a bit better than what Autumn showed up in. Still she suffers, "If this wind would just cool it we could try to figure out a ritual. But I dont know it off by heart." she wags her closed book around, but the pages are quickly getting wet and the whole book is about to be a right-off thanks to the downpour. "Oh god."

"I have been through ghost banishings before," Autumn says, whispering something under breath as her bracelet begins to glow a warm red-orange. That is, until the downpour gets her soaking wet. "Let's hope cold weather doesn't freeze all this," she mutters while she opens up her fur coat.

Getting battered by the rain, Ryan can't see anything as he flips through his book, trying to shield it from the downpour with the umbrella as he says, "Sea ghost? I think I have sea ghosts in here. Uh...I know the Spears of the Sea has some kind of thing for it, let's see...okay, here we go..." he begins to chant loudly:

"Spirits of the sea, hear my plea, By the power of the deep, I set you free..."

Harriet does a double take over at the pantsless Autumn whilst trying to ensure everyone is at least semi all right. She has to dismiss whatever she was going to comment, and her throat clears as Autumn fixes her outfit and she looks between Ryan and Jessica to see what their books tell about all of this with the angry bay in the distance and the wicked winds whipping at them.

Autumn says "Forgot to put these on."
"My book only has a general overview of ghost banishings." Jessica says, briefly trying to peel the pages open. She has to shout to be heard, but she does feel in nessecary to tease Autumn despite the circumstances, "Yes I often leave home without my pants on."

A brilliant flash of lightning blinds anyone who hasn't covered their eyes.

Continuing his chant, Ryan flips a page in the book, peering at it closely as he huddles under the umbrella,

"Return to the waves, where you belong,"
"No longer to haunt, no longer strong."
"Salt and water, wind and tide,"
"With this chant, your presence I deride."

He looks around at the others as he traces his finger down the book, reading some more as he takes a deep breath.

The flash of lightning dazes Ryan briefly, as he yelps, "Gah!" and blinks, wiping his eyes as he squints and tries to read the blurry pages.

Harriet is ever polite by giving Autumn some privacy as she gets dressed in this awful storm by closing her eyes. Thankfully, that is right when the lightning strikes, so she's saved her vision. She coughs lightly upon hearing Jessica's claim, and flinches some over the electric shock that blasts into the area again. With Ryan performing the arcane chant, she focuses on in his words as much as she can.

"Eep!" Autumn jumps from the lightning strike, causing the puddle to splash under her. Puffing her cheeks while rubbing her eyes with one hand, she makes gestures with her other hand and her bracelet's glow begins to pulse.

Jessica slams her eyes shut after the lightening blinds her just like everyone else. She whines under her breath and takes some time to rub her eyes with thumb and index reaching up under her glasses.

Harriet finally reopens her eyes, and as lids lift and lashes flutter -- mainly out of her control because, damn, that wind is powerful, she tries to see if there is anything useful she can do. With effort, she moves to try and stand in front of Autumn in an attempt to at least block a bit of the wind from striking the resident arcanist.

Continuing his chanting as Ryan blinks a few times, wiping his eyes some more and reading loudly: "From ship to shore, from depth to coast,"
"I banish thee now, seafaring ghost."
"In Neptune's name, I break your chain,"
"To the ocean depths, return again."

He searches down the page some more, squinting as he pulls the page right in front of his face, trying to read the blurry words.

A heavy tree branch, flung by the storm, crashes into Harriet's mid-section.

It is a good thing Harriet moved in front of Autumn to try and protect her, because right after, that heavy tree branch comes flying their way. It impacts the brunette, and she falls promptly over, shrieking loudly as she does. That really hurt.

"Okay, this ghost is much more violent," Autumn says, freeing her hand to help Harriet. "Let's deal with it quick." She then starts chanting under her breath, closing her eyes as she channels her magic.

Coming over to help Harriet, Ryan hustles over, nudging Jessica with an elbow to follow him as the umbrella they're both under is moving with him. He tucks the book under his arm as he reaches his real right hand not holding the umbrella or book out to help Harriet up. "Up we go!" he says to Harriet.

Jessica visibly winces as she sees Harriet get struck by the tree branch, she starts to move towards her looking worried but unsure what to do, "Are you ok?" she ask, adrenaline making her voice shakey

Harriet lies there on the dirty grass, stunned somewhat and having had the wind knocked out of her. The help from Ryan is accepted and she suddenly takes in a harsh inhale to replenish her recently robbed lungs of oxygen. Once she can speak again, she relays to the surfer, "Thank you," and then assures Jessica, "I think... so..." Her hands are patting at her mid-section, and she winces again. "All right Ryan, it seems your chant is at least making it angry. Let's continue with it."

Harriet loses their footing in the lashing wind and rain, as she goes down she is lost to sight by the rest of the group for some time.

Nodding to Harriet as Ryan flips open his book again, searching for the page quickly as he reads the last part of the ritual, chanting:

"With this verse, your bonds I sever,"
"Be gone from here, and gone forever!"

"Okay, it says now we sing a sea shanty!" he looks around, not seeing Harriet as he says, "What the fuck? Miss Harry? Are you there?! This rain is so thick, shit, man. I can't see anyone!"

Standing up only worked out briefly for Harriet -- and down she goes again! She's whisked away by the winds, being drug across the soppy, storm laden ground of the cemetery. RIP to her fance outfit, and Ryan and Jessica are left to croon that traditional folk song.

"Harriet!" Jessica calls uselessly as she loses sight of the woman who is swept away. She doesn't dare go hunting for the woman, instead she looks to Ryan and says, "We need to end this quickly or we'll all drown."

Bellowing out at the top of his lungs, Ryan sings,

"What shall we do with a drunken sailor, early in the morning?"
"Shave his belly with a rusty razor,"
"Shave his belly with a rusty razor,"
"Shave his belly with a rusty razor,"
"Early in the morning!"

he looks to Jessica as he prompts her to sing a verse.

Harriet battles the storm by simply trying not to be tossed into the waves. Her hands are desperately using slim fingers to dig into the wet earth, muddying herself all up as she fights to keep her ground. Her ground is a mess, though, and the mud and blades of dead, winter grass doesn't offer much assistance in return. The wind is howling and she is unable to hear Ryan singing, nor see how he looks to Jessica.

Jessica visibly cringes, she must not trust her singing voice. But she does try anyways, slowly trailing into the verse mid-verse to join Ryan. She repeats the Chorous with him, a half second slow as she doesn't know the words and if the song might change suddenly.

Harriet loses their footing in the lashing wind and rain, as she goes down she is lost to sight by the rest of the group for some time.

It seems that although Harriet really does try her absolute best, it isn't enough whatsoever, and off she goes further towards the deadly waters.

"Sing! Sing!" Ryan says as he yells again, "What do we do with a drunken sailor?" he looks to Autumn and Jessica, "...Early in the morning?" he motions to them, murmuring, "Just make up some dumb shit that you do to drunk people."

Harriet struggles relentlessly, and she also keeps failing. She uses every bit of her strength to attempt to keep herself from being swept away to sea, but the storm proves to be remarkably powerful.

Jessica gradually grows in confidence in her singing, or at least through desperation. Singing louder and more forcefully the little sea shanty to try and appease the spirit, if not banish it outright

Autumn joins in on Ryan's chanting, not being a great singer but she chants away anyway. Through the storm, her bracelet glows even brighter while she attempts to help Harriet up. "Dump his head with a bowl of cider, dump his head with a bowl of cider..."

"Dump his head with a bowl of cider, Early in the morning!" Ryan sings at the top of his lungs, adding a verse, "What do we do with a drunken sailor, early in the morning?"
"Put him in bed with the captain's daughter,"
"Put him in bed with the captain's daughter,"
"Early in the morning!"

He sings with reckless abandon, trying to distract the spirit from drowning Harriet with the deluge.

Harriet grunts and groans as she exercises every ounce of energy she can to try and fight the storm's grasp upon her, but she keeps slipping further and further away from Ryan, Jessica, and Autumn.

A disturbing giggle turns into a scream as the spirit is finally banished, the dark clouds overhead rumbling as if in impotent rage as they slowly begin to retreat. The rain finally stops and the wind settles, in the distance off the coast a dark ship can be seen slipping away.
