Williams Odd Encounter Sr Anemone 240922

In the serenity of a hospital room where William Thorne lay recuperating from a near-fatal drowning, an abrupt disruption comes in the form of two state troopers from the Haven Sheriff's Department. They enter with a charge hanging heavy in the air, accusing William of a crime spree that seems both impossible and unfathomable given his current state and recent arrival in Haven. The allegations are severe, ranging from the possession of stolen historical artifacts to conspiracy and interference with police investigations, all linked to disturbances within the town. Despite the pain and shock, William manages to question the validity of these accusations, pointing out his incapability to have committed such acts due to his recent immigration and current hospitalization.

As the tension escalates with the officers demanding proof of his innocence, William, with effort marred by his physical state, produces evidence of his flights and bus tickets that corroborate his claim of having just arrived in town. This momentary digital testament is enough to cast doubt upon the officers' hasty judgment, though not without eliciting a poorly veiled threat and xenophobic remark from one of the troopers. In a final act of defiance, or perhaps a subtle jab at the injustices he faces, William sarcastically questions if there was anything else the officers required, pointedly ignoring the male trooper's aggression. The officers, frustrated and defeated by this revelation, exit the scene, leaving behind a palpable tension and a hint of unresolved conflict.

In hospital room 2
This room is sparsely furnished, the sanitary white walls a perfect match
to the linoleum floor and the thin hospital sheets on the gurney that serves
as a bed. A small television mounted in the upper corner of the room is set
at a low volume, and a thin curtain bisects the room in an effort to afford
privacy to the occupant on the other side.

It is night, about 57F(13C) degrees, There is a waning gibbous moon.

The muted sounds of the hospital - monitors beeping softly, the shuffle of nurses' shoes on linoleum - create a cocoon of mundanity that felt almost surreal against the gravity of William's situation. He lay in the stark, sterile room, an IV drip keeping him tethered to life while pain pulsed through his body like an unwelcome companion. The drowning that had landed William in the hospital was unfortunately not going to be the worst thing to happen to him after his recent immigration to Haven.

A heavy footfall echoed outside the door, breaking the delicate spell of normalcy. As the door swings open with a metallic creak, two state troopers stride into the room, their uniforms crisp and imposing, badges glinting like ominous stars. The first, a tall man with a square jaw and a commanding presence, exudes authority as he stepped forward. The second, a woman with sharp features and an equally formidable demeanor, lingered just behind him, her gaze scanning the room with calculated intensity. Their badges indicate that they are from the HSD - the Haven Sheriff's Department. "William Thorne?", the male asks, his voice deep and resonant, slicing through the gentle quiet of the hospital's machinery. "Under the authority of the state of Massachusetts, we have a warrant out for your arrest," he informs the bedridden William, without giving William any opportunity to respond to the first question of William's identity.

The female simply waits by the door, in silent, intent vigil.

William is stunned by the sudden appearance of the two individuals, making an effort to rise his torso from the bed and switch into a sitting position, resting his back then against the pillows of the bed. He takes a deep and slow breath, scanning them with half lidded eyes, his breathing heavier than it normally would be. He coughs sorely a couple times before finally speaking up, his voice low and clearly weak "Arrest? What for?" He simply says, deciding to save as much energy as he could, despite the crazy situation he was in

"Suspicion of-" the male begins, but is cut off by the female officer. "Those are the charges we need to discuss," the female officer said, her tone businesslike, devoid of sympathy. "For now, we need you to cooperate. You cant leave this hospital until we get some answers."

"Like where you hid the relics," the male officer grills William. "The Haven Historical society is missing some of its display pieces and we know it's your fault." They serve the warrant to William right there in the bed, and as William reads it, he discovers what is arrayed against him - and the impossibility that any of the charges on display were William's responsibility. They were as follows -

Possession of Illegally Obtained Artifacts: It was alleged that William had been found in possession of items believed to be stolen from a local historical society, artifacts with rumored connections to the supernatural. This included items that, while ostensibly mundane, had been linked to a series of local disturbances - whispers of curses and hauntings. He is accused of engaging in blackmail to force locals to do what he says lest William deliver the curses upon them, next.

Interference with a Police Investigation: Authorities claimed that William had been involved in a series of events that had obstructed their efforts to investigate a recent string of bizarre occurrences in the area. The details were murky, but it was suggested that he had been seen at several sites connected to these incidents, which included reports of strange lights and unexplained phenomena, especially around Arkwright Graveyard.

Conspiracy to Commit Fraud: The fraudulent activities are stated to be connected to folklore tours William's sister had organized. Allegations pointed to financial discrepancies that suggested manipulation of funds to avoid taxes.

Therefore, the police were here to make sure William didn't leave the hospital unless it was in a pair of cuffs.

William takes his sweet time to read through the note, clearly in no rush, or maybe in no condition to be paying attention with care to these things. He seems stranged by what he reads, he just got here the day previous, and it was true that his sister had been around for a bit longer, but he clearly doubted the allegations against her. After reading the whole thing a second time he glances towards the officers, trying not to move too much to prevent himself from aching even more, his eyes settling first on the man, and then moving to the woman, lingering there for a tad longer "Well, as you can see... I am in no condition to leave anyways... Besides, when did this all happen? I just arrived in town yesterday night"

The policemen share a glance with each other. "Yesterday night?", they repeat, in disbelief. "We'll see how that holds up. What proof do you have of that?", they inquire of William.

William pauses to think for a moment, it has hard to prove something like that, before he finds something that could work "Well... I still have my flight ticket, and the bus ticket I used to get here in particular... Those could easily prove it, yes?" He says reaching for his phone, tapping the screen carefully a couple times, trying to find the flight information

As the policemen wait impatiently for William, a bed-bound convalescent, to come up with proof that William doesn't deserve to be locked up for something he never did and couldn't possibly have been around for, the nurses come in and start to shriek at them about how William is recovering and needs rest. They glare, and there's a conflict between authorities beginning to grow in the room.

William takes a deep breath, trying to ignore the noise of the arguing, eventually he manages to open the details of the flight he took. He turns the phone slowly towards the agents, and if being read, it would indicate that the flight's estimated arrival time in a city not too far away from Haven was around midday yesterday, or well, the day before considering the hour, it was already past midnight but not dawn yet. He sighs, his body slacking some more onto the bed while holding the phone "There... There it is"

The female officer walks over to the bed and inspects William's phone, and then scowls. "Looks like it adds up, Ben," she calls over to the shouting argument over there. "God fucking damnit," he swears, stomping over. "We got our eye on you. Don't come into OUR country and break OUR laws," he commands, pointing a finger directly into William's face. Even though William hasn't broken any laws.

William grows a slight frown or a squint, but doesn't really say anything. Maybe under any other circumstances he would have replied to that, or made some joke about the name New England, but not this time, he was definitely annoyed by the comment, but not willing to start any kind of fight in his condition. He instead goes for the next best thing, ignoring the guy completely, and turns towards the female officer "I doubt my sister did what it says here either... But I have no proof for that. Was that all that you needed officer?" His voice highlighting the last word, making emphasis on the singular to annoy the man, some sort of petty payback, if you can even call it that

Leaving after sending some choice swears at the nurses, who were doing their best to protect William, they glare at William over their shoulders as they depart...
