Rumored to be the child of Astarte - who would later take on the guise of Aphrodite - and (one of) her (many) husband(s) who would go on to become Hephaestus, Astaroth loosely translates to 'Astarte's shame', an allusion to his dubious parentage and his mother's myriad infidelities. He is rumored to have been the Pygmalion of legends, both the tyrannical king who drove Dido to flee and found Carthage, and the sculptor, though the truth is far darker than the myth, before he abandoned the Earth for Sirinia, where the ensuing wars transformed him into a nightmare. Astaroth is the twisted personification of tortured artists, philosophers, and scientists; fueled by their suffering, he collects and sculpts flesh, crafting fodder for Hell's eternal war.
