A Battle In The Nightmare 241013

(A battle in the Nightmare)

[Sat Oct 12 2024]

At The Forest

It is morning, about 53F(11C) degrees, and the sky is covered by dark grey stormclouds.

Korina(snow leopard) doesn't waste any time in hiding - she's shifting to all fours and sprinting towards the nearest person as soon as she's pulled into the nightmare, eyes narrowed at Isaiah.

Isaiah(wolf) snarls as he spots Korina(snow leopard) bolting towards him, dropping to all fours immediately and shaking his cloak off to the side. If it is to be a battle of the beasts, he will oblige, and happily so. There's a distinct lack of malice in his eyes that is replaced by an overwhelming glee, a bloodlust that is only directed towards Korina(snow leopard) because she is there in the moment. He waits patiently, letting his body recover from the changing as his maw splits to allow his steaming-hot tongue to lap over his salivating jowls.

The leopard's leaping charge ends with an acrobatic roll along the ground, and Korina(Homo felis) is neither woman nor leopard when she finds her way back to her feet again, much closer this time, an arrow upon her bow released at Isaiah(wolf) in one swift movement.

The look of distaste on Isaiah(wolf)'s face is easily red when Korina(Homo felis) swaps to a bipedal form, the fun taken out of his game. Still, he doesn't bother to halt his pursuit of her, four legs charging across the ground as he swiftly cuts the distance between them in half, eager to move on to his next victim; he seems to be on some sort of mission today, and Korina(Homo felis) isn't on his list of things to do. So, he pushes, and pushes, as fast as he can.

Korina(Homo felis) isn't /too/ interested in keeping to range either - where Isaiah(wolf) charges in, she closes the distance as well, another arrow shot along the way. Her tail swishes behind her, back and forth through the air. "You should try to pick on someone your size," she tells Isaiah(wolf), casually. "But I don't mind beating up dogs."

Isaiah(wolf) doesn't respond to Korina(Homo felis)'s tauntings- then again, how could he? With his lupine maw and overlong tongue, he knows little besides the ways of battle; human languages evade him. This form is good for little more than rending flesh from bone, and he puts that to use in the way he leaps up, swiping at Korina(Homo felis)'s midsection alongside a snickering Imp comprised of roaring flame.

Korina(Homo felis) glances askance at a snickering Imp comprised of roaring flame at its arrival, a low hiss escaping her. Her ears twitch in irritation, but she keeps her eyes focused on Isaiah(wolf) - the moment of distraction does result in her almost getting clawed open, but she's got armor alongside the toughness that shapeshifting provides her, so the only response Isaiah(wolf) gets is another swipe of claws.

Isaiah(wolf) has to dodge backwards when Korina(Homo felis) swipes at him with her claws, and so the next strike he lands against her is lessened by hesitation, a mere swat rather than a brutal clawing as the Wolf rearranges himself, circling her, attempting to flank instead for his next attack. A low, rumbling growl reverberates in his chest, vibrating down into the very ground beneath him with every heavy step he takes.

There's an answering growl in Korina(Homo felis)'s chest as she bats away the swipe of claws, and she pulls back now, simply keeping an eye out for Isaiah(wolf)'s movements, tracking them like she's calculating her next move, blue eyes focused and alert.

Isaiah(wolf) watches Korina(Homo felis)'s form begin to vibrate, but he seems quite familiar with these tricks. Rather than take his next strike, he hunkers down, keeping low so that when those claws do inevitably come for him, his bristled fur and hunched muscle will absorb some of the damage inflicted upon his person. Blue eyes on fire, he observes the feline female, salivating, waiting, patient as a predator should be.

If Korina(Homo felis)'s disappointed at her tricks not taking, it doesn't show - she takes advantage of the moment of Isaiah(wolf)'s caution to catch her breath anyway, and then she's back at it, stepping to the side in an attempt to rake her claws down Isaiah(wolf)'s flank.

Isaiah(wolf) seems to think he has been patient enough- but he is wrong. He lunges towards where he thinks Korina(Homo felis) is, but she isn't. Instead he bursts through a mirage of the woman and finds himself tearing into his own partner with ferocity- a snickering Imp comprised of roaring flame is the victim of this savage attack, and he yelps in surprise as he savages the fiery creature, stepping back away from it, his gaping maw billowing steam from biting through fire itself.

Korina(Homo felis) laughs out loud - there's no hiding her amusement when Isaiah(wolf) barrels past her to lunge for a snickering Imp comprised of roaring flame, and both wolf and imp pay for it when she slices at his arm with steel claws instead of bone, the weapon cutting through fur and piercing skin, even if it's a superficial cut.

Isaiah(wolf) yelps again, this time in further pain as blood is drawn. He grits his teeth in feral fashion and wheels on Korina(Homo felis), pupils contracted to mere pinpricks as he rushes her again, mouth wide open in an attempt to clamp down on her head, righteous vengeance, at least in his mind, for her tricks. At least a snickering Imp comprised of roaring flame doesn't seem to be holding a grudge against Isaiah(wolf) for his mistake.

It's true, Korina(Homo felis) did get punched by a snickering Imp comprised of roaring flame. He's more forgiving than Korina(Homo felis), who responds to Isaiah(wolf)'s aggression with a smack of her claws against his muzzle - attempts to, at least, as she side-steps to keep from getting her head chomped off. "Wrong person," she tells Isaiah(wolf). "Your target is over there, see?" Is that an attempt at distraction? It may just be. She's gesturing at a snickering Imp comprised of roaring flame.

Isaiah(wolf) growls again as Korina(Homo felis) taunts him, his many bleeding wounds dripping about his furred form as he takes punishment after punishment. He doesn't underestimate his opponents- but sometimes he underestimates the duration of their skills. He's a young pup- he'll learn. Some day. Perhaps today. This blunder, this mistake, is a stepping stone and a lesson in this never-ending battle of cats and dogs; he will remember this, and it doesn't knock him from his stride. He just steps right back into Korina(Homo felis) and attempts to gouge her with every ounce of strength he has left in his body while a snickering Imp comprised of roaring flame just keeps on punching.

Korina(Homo felis) twitches with irritation every time a snickering Imp comprised of roaring flame punches her, even though she blocks it the best she can. "Maybe next time I will bring Asad out to play," she says out loud, more to herself than to Isaiah(wolf), and the last of the wolf's strength sees yet another failure as she dashes to the side and rakes her claws all the way along his leg on the way, attempting to hamstring him and put him out of the fight.

Isaiah(wolf) fades out of the nightmare.

And /then/ does Korina(Homo felis) turn to a snickering Imp comprised of roaring flame, a growl low in her throat as she pounces on the creature and does her best to tear it apart from limb to fiery limb while braving the flame - it's unpleasant, with fur.
