(Ash's decursing attempt)
[Tue Aug 13 2024]
In Rosie's Diner
Filled with nostalgia, this diner is a step into the past - to a time of swing and jive, and one would claim, simpler times. The walls are cream toned, letting the pink and turquoise neon striping along the ceiling give the space more vibrant coloring. Pieces of kitsch and memorabilia are posted here and there, providing character and retro style.
Behind the counter, cooks work the main line, allowing customers to watch as their meals are prepped. A soda fountain and a glass domed freezer is set away from the heat, where the soda jerk creates speciality floats, sundaes, malts and shakes.
Meanwhile, waitresses on roller skates gracefully take orders, their uniforms chock full of bling.
It is afternoon, about 91F(32C) degrees,
Ash gives Elias a grin, saying, "That's good to hear! We only made a profit of $81 this past week, so I'm doing my best to get that up. I'm thinking of giving employees a bonus based on every $100 we earn. The last owner made $500 in a week, so I think we can do it in time."
Ash says "Did Lis say when he's coming back?"
"Nope." Illyana shrugs. "Grabbed his waterand wandered off."
"Never been there, nope. But if it's cool, I'll hang there." Randall allows in response to Ash. His gaze moves away from them and briefly to Elias then back to Ash. "I don't think so."
Ash nods, saying, "Oh, I think you'll love it, Randall! And yeah, Elias! What a keen eye. I wanted Lis to help with that... but, if he's gone, he's gone. I think I'll wait a bit, see what's up, before going out back, though."
"No need to stay and entertain me." Randall assures Ash helpfully.
Ash smiles to Randall, saying, "Well, one of our other servers can ring you up if you want anything more. I have a feeling that we'll get more customers soon, though."
Ash says "Hmm... no one's answering in the other chatroom."
Randall slides from his stool, wiggling his fingers in a wave to Illyana and inviting Ash "Hit me up" His eyes slide to Alina and he flashes a smile, then he's looking toward the door.
Ash shrugs. "Well, I have you two. See ya, Randall!" They give Randall a wave.
Illyana gives Randall a wiggle of the fingers back. "Have a good day, Randall."
Ash says "Alright, ready to begin?"
Ash says "Oh, wait."
Ash says "Sorry Alina- oh, she left."
Ash shrugs, going back inside. They call out over their shoulder, "We have some business, but if you need anything, our waitresses are here! We will be back in about half an hour!"
Illyana makes her way into the back room also. Moving to the curtains, she steps behind them, quickly changing into street clothes before stepping back out. "Illyana." she introduces to Elias.
Ash says "Alright, now. Ready? Yana, do you have much experience with this?"
"Likewise." Illyana allows with an up-nod to Elias.
Ash says to Illyana, "Can you take the fore, here? I want to see how well you do with this sort of thing."
"Alright Ash, what are we working with?" Elias asks Ash as glances down into his coffee, seeming to assess something within its depths, "Hopefully it won't require a lot of blood. I am a bit exhausted."
"I'm aweful with this kind of thing. It's far from my circle." Illyana confesses easily. "I'm an information gatherer, not an arcanist by trade. I just assumed I was here to insure no ghostly intervention or to whammy anyone who stumbled in."
Ash gives Elias a nod, saying, "And I'm conserving. Fortunately, blood isn't always needed. Here." They hold up a silver necklace by the chain, in their hand. "Give it a try, Yana. You don't need to be an arcanist, but sometimes, you may be the only one around, and you need to be able to contribute. What ideas might you have to handle it? Any idea works. You have Elias and I to assist you."
"Works for me." Elias says rather indifferently as he goes back to sipping on his coffee as he watches the two interact with the cursed piece of jewelry.
An arc of lightning blasts out of the artifact to strike Illyana, sending her flying.
Ash smiles softly at Illyana, saying, "See? It doesn't care whether or not you are an arcanist. Haven won't care. You don't need to specialize, but you should learn how to handle these things." They continue to just stand there, as lightning zaps around the silver artifact.
Ducking as the lightning bolt arcs outwards, Elias takes effort in the middle of the duck to recover balance with his mug to avoid spilling on himself. Luckily the mug is almost empty, only allowing a few droplets of dark liquid to hit the floor. Once he stands up straight once more, he shifts his gray-blue eyes on the victim of the bolt of lightning.
Ash suggest to Elias, keeping an eye on Illyana, "You might not want to stand between the artifact and anyone else."
"Kinda surprised the jewelry reacted so strongly to her to be honest." Elias says to Ash with a faint shrug, "I thought she was rather green and she hasn't really done anything yet to try to break the enchantment."
Illyana gets thrown back, but with preternatural reflexes, she is able to steady herself before hitting the wall. "Well, now I want to crush it." the bohemian admits. But okay, cursed item." She returns to the others, cat like as her eyes narrow to study the thing. "How does it work? If I get an idea of that, it should be counterable, right?" she asks Ash. "So this one's lightning based. So water?""
Ash shakes their head, explaining, "The curses can be aware, but sometimes, it's just violent lashing. It doesn't necessarily have a mind to choose to do or not do." They turn back to Illyana, listening. "Well, that's a good start. I can tell you now, there's many ways of doing this, so let's follow that. Do we have any water?" Their expression is calm, and emotionless, though they must be aware that they are also in danger of the curse.
Lifting the mug one final time, Elias sets it on one of the back room shelves. He rolls his shoulders, a hand finding its way to one of them and starts rubbing, "Don't look at me, you are Ash's appreciate or whatever. I didn't know I was going to be teaching magic today. I am usually a clear example on how not to tamper with curses and spirits." He muses.
Ash adds, "I wouldn't recommend leaving, now that we have started. And she's not my apprentice. Maybe this is a test, Elias, and maybe you're also being tested." They waggle their brows at Elias, grinning wickedly.
Illyana doesn't disagree with Elias's assessment. "Like I said, not my circle." Never the less, she picks it up by the chain, avoiding the amulet. "Sure do." she mentions, opening the ice tray in the fridge and making to toss the thing in.""
"I barely passed High School. I don't really do tests, you know, more practical applications instead of pop quizes." Elias says as he tucks a hand into his pocket as he continues, "If this isn't her trial, it isn't much one for me in the end. I am a stormcaller." He offers without much explanation.
"I'm one of the President's Whispers, actually." Illyana allows. "Which is why I'm shocked I'm here, but if we're doing this." And that fridge door is closed.
Ash sets the amulet into the ice tray, saying, "Okay, we've placed it within a conductive resource. Will this make is stronger or weaker, do you thing?" Turning to Elias, they add, "A stormcaller and a curse that-"
An arc of lightning blasts out of the artifact to strike Illyana, sending her flying.
Ash adds to Illyana, "I think it makes it stronger."
A touch of amusement crosses his face as he concludes, "I think Ash's approach is to use you as a lightning rod until it uses up all of its magical energies. Not an approach I would have chosen, but I guess it could be effective. I am more curious now than anything else. A sound experiment if I ever have seen one." Elias muses as Illyana is struck by lightning again.
Illyana offers an "Ooof." as answer, but once again, she rolls back to her feet. "Science doesn't work then." To Elias, she smirks back. "I've eaten far worse from something far more powerful. If that's the method, I can keep getting zapped." And indeed, she's already regenerating.
Ash opens the fridge, taking the necklace back out of the ice box, phone to their ear. "No, no, I'm not doing that." They add to Illyana, "Science isn't incompatible with magic. You wanted to scatter the energy by sending it through a conductive medium, right? What else can we do"
Casting his gaze towards the ceiling, Elias grumbles, "Well, I should just help you. If the diner smells like burnt hair, I will hear Ash complain about business being down after that." Elias says as he refocuses on Illyana, "So, science will not work. Typically what you will want to do is make an offering to spirits in return for stripping the enchantments off the cursed article."
The artifact emits a flash of blinding light.
Squinting his eyes as the surge of light bursts from it, Elias calls out to the necklace, "See, you don't like it when your dirty little secrets come out, do you?"
"Fucking everything's an offering." Illyana frowns at Ash. "I also don't believe you." she smarms. She notices the artifact begin to shine before it blinds and is in time to throw up a hand to shield her eyes. "Like for like? Smashing the thing are my other ideas."
Ash sighs, and puts the necklace down on the ground. "Try grounding. I need you all to be silent for, like, three minutes." They kneel, and put their hand over it, closing their eyes.
Pulling out a bowie knife, Elias starts drawing the edge the palm of his hand. A red line starts to well up where he cut and he squeezes his hand shut in a tight fist, letting blood drip to the floor, "Spirit of the winds, I call upon you to quench the curse in this item. I offer you a sacrifice, one of blood. Accept this tribute and rid us of this burden."
Ash removes their hands, then allows Elias to handle it, instead, leaving it on the ground.
As hold up his fist, lightning starts arcing out from his watch and wind starts to swirl around him, Elias calls out louder, "Spirit of the winds, destroy the curse, free Ash from this burden!"
Illyana steps back, hopefully out of range of another zap.
With a final burst of power the curse on a silver necklace is broken.
