(Ash's syndicate bargain)
[Sat Sep 14 2024]
In Town Hall Southern Meeting Room
It is about 55F(12C) degrees.
Ash says "Not paper official... and I just had a heart attack, I thought this was you."
Fayad snorts. "If only."
Ash says "The person for sale here."
Ash says "Yep. But different eyes."
Ash says "I'm pretty sure I've met this one before... but probably not often."
Fayad stands silently after having made his bid, evidently with no one to talk to.
Ash says "You know her? Auction is almost over."
One of Fayad's hands raise, as if it were puppeting a, well, puppet, it turns to glance over toward Ash, and then back to Fayad. "Poor, and poorer. Who will win?" The words eek out of Fayad's mouth against his will.
Ash chuckles, saying, "I wonder. Why do you want someone? You won't do the same that was done to you, I'm sure... so what's the value?"
Fayad shrugs. "Depends on who it is," he mutters.
Ash says "I definitely don't know what you are talking about, in that case."
Ash bows their head to Nikolai and Korina respectfully, looking over Everly with a curious expression.
Ash says "Maybe you're just lucky. Maybe I rubbed off on you."
"I think it is Illyana," Nikolai grunts with a frown, leaning in to slip a guard a couple green notes. "Intern - this is Ash Starling and Fayad al-Whatever. Ash is one of us. Fayad is a shithead, and one of core members of the Disruptors."
The auctioneer announces that Ash has won the bid and goes over to him to discuss delivery.
Ash says "Yes, exactly who I thought she was... but I only met her once."
"--Oh," softly utters Everly when the prize catch is dragged out, blinking with some recognition.
Ash turns their face to Everly, curious, before searching for money and taking the woman's phone. Just a casual Friday night for this androgyne.
Ash says "Hmm... not enough to pay me back."
"Da," Nikolai grunts over to Everly. "Sanctuary means that even mundane criminal cannot be sent to prison or even kept in jail very long, so local police force consists of 'special deputies' instead. Syndicate is not afraid to target them, because there is little consequence a cop can respond with in town. Keep these things in mind; they can be advantage." He reaches up to scrape his nails along the fresh stubble along his neck, then says to Ash, "We will leave you to it, da?"
Korina tilts her head to the side, trying to figure out if she knows Savannah - the answer seems to be yes, somehow, from somewhere, but she doesn't look like she's got any idea at all. There's a wriggling of her fingers at Ash once the device changes hands - the phone. She wants to see.
Everly catches Ash's glance and coughs up what meager intel she's collected in the space of a single evening. "... Saw her when I was out looking for smokes earlier, watched her for a bit. She was walking around the Devilwood area. And like, farther west from there. Maybe lives out that way or something." That's all she knows. She looks up at Nikolai when he starts dishing out some useful instruction, absorbing it all while she chews on her lip ring. "Copy," she murmurs to show she's understood.
Ash turns to look down to Savannah, fiddling with her phone. "Alright, you're lucky you got me - I'm easy. I need your name, and another $100, and we're even, yeah?" Turning their head over their shoulder, they ask Everly in a Tejano drawl, "She wasn't mean to you or anything, was she? No reason to punish her?"
Korina sniffs at her wriggling fingers going ignored, but there's no move to grab the phone once it's placed on the ground again. She simply moves on to stare at Nikolai, all ready to go once Everly's answered Ash.
Ash completely missed the fingers, having turned away, but they hear the sniff - the annoyed sniff. Ever obedient, they make the connection, handing the phone over.
Nope, too late. Korina retracts her hand and lets the phone go plonk to the floor. If the screen cracks, that Ash's doing and not hers.
Ash says "Oh, holy shit."
Everly takes a quick peek down at her phone and hums a thoughtful note to herself, then tucks it away into her pocket again. "Nahhh," she assures Ash. Then her eyes crawl over Savannah in contemplation, and she 'helpfully' proposes, "Could punish her for those shoes, I guess."
Yes, Everly, of all people, stood there looking like this, is criticizing someone else's wardrobe. The gall.
Ash shakes their head, reading their phone text before drawling, "No... I think I'm letting her go. I apologize for the inconvenience, ma'am." They untie her, allowing her to get up and take her phone, with moderate expect. They're not groveling for forgiveness, but they are polite now, at least.
Ash rises, then moves to let her walk out, arm out.
Raising an eyebrow at Ash, Nikolai steps wordlessly aside to allow Savannah past him, but there's a look leveled at shorter, darker figure - he expects an explanation for the sudden shift in attitude, but it can wait until the deputy's gone on her way.
Everly squints at Ash a bit, sucking on her teeth, thinking. She glances from him to Savannah and back again, watching how this plays out. Maybe learning something.
