(Edith's decursing attempt)
[Sun Apr 13 2025]
In the Reception of the White Oak Union
The Union serves as the gateway to the rest of the campus and facilities
therein. Less a building and more the seamless fusion of the two adjacent
structures, the space is styled as a plaza with office space lining both
sides.
The plaza provides space for administrative offices and important communal
areas such as the lunch room, bookstore, and library. It's also home to the
Haven Sheriff's Department, the deputies of which assist with school security
and community outreach when their other duties permit.
Residents otherwise unassociated with the Institute come and go through the
Union, unmolested by security or staff, many on the way to the clinic or
library.
It is about 50F(10C) degrees.
Alan pushes waits a moment for the doors to open clutching his briefcase. While not automatic, eventually a few people push out and he slips in to maneuver through the light morning crowds.
Stepping away from the ATM, Edith moves to the receptionist's desk with a grimace. She spots Alan, though doesn't interupt.
Alan lifts a hand to wave to Edith as he meets her gaze, affecting an amiable smile that seems more a mask than anything genuine "Ah, good morning!" he greets without hesitation.
"Good morning." Edith responds in kind, looking to the gold necklace that she finds on the receptionist's desk.
Maria enters, closing the doors behind herself as she shoots a few texts, nodding her head at everyone who is present.
Alan seems to linger near the reception desk, opening his briefcase to retrieve some paperwork from it, he opts to loiter a few steps away from Edith with said papers in hand. As Maria and Konami meander in he nods amiably to each.
Konami gives a nod to the people in the reception room as she wanders in, yawning a bit and glancing at her phone idly.
"Konami, Maria." Edith greets Maria and Konami. "Good morning."
Alan raises a brow as he senses something, looking to Maria speculatively "I uhm, oh dear." he says nervously, immediately slipping around her to deliver his paperwork "Oh please don't get lost this time." he mutters as he sticks a few items on top of them to secure it, and then locks his briefcase up tightly.
"I very much dislike this, though one does what they must, and White Oak accomidates." Edith sighs, slapping the necklace back down as she regards Alan, Maria and Konami. "These things... I will know which student left a cursed item and they will be punished. Please do ask around. This is dangerous."
Alan looks on over the necklace with fascination "Ah, truly? Of course, Ms..." he asks with a tilt of his head, giving a quick glance down her form for signs of rank or station.
Maria nods her head at Edith. "Greetings, lady Rose." She responds with a soft murmur, typing away at her phone as she seems to be a bit dazed, on her own wavelength, even.
She looks back to Alan, tilting her head, to Edith though, she nods her head. "I can ask around, sure thing." The girl pockets her phone after shooting a few texts, cracking her knuckles.
"Doctor Edith Rose." Edith introduces herself to Alan as she begins to break the curse on the offending article.
Konami shrugs at Edith's comment and says, "Sure, if I happen to hear anything about it, I'll let you know."
Alan nods a bit, seeming about to give a friendly introduction, but he opts against it as her attention turns to the necklace, instead responding with a quiet "Dr. Alan Haran, at your service Dr. Rose."
An arc of lightning blasts out of the artifact to strike Alan, sending him flying.
"A pleasure." Edith responds to Alan, clearly missing the lightning as she focuses on the decursing, fingers motioning in a pinching motion as though gathering thread and tugging.
Alan coughs and sputters as he's thrown against the reception desk sending the aformentioned paperwork scattered, eyes wide as smoke rises from his tweed jacket.
"It is likely obvious by this point," Edith continues, "Though I am para sciences and forensics."
Maria sees the lightning blast out, and so she instead makes a complete 180 degre turn to dash towards the man, attempting to ascertain the extent of the injuries! And to help him up. "Are you alright, good sir?"
"Y'know... I'm really glad that's never happened to me, the few times I've watched one of those things being decursed." Konami remarks quietly as Alan gets zapped and sent flying.
Alan blinks daftly at Maria, accepting the help up. He still clutches his briefcase through it all, and brings it to his smoking chest, looking down "Shock..." he puts two fingers to his neck "Arythmic." he doesn't looked panicked so much as he's having trouble speaking; or standing for that matter, leaning heavily on Maria.
"Hmm?" Edith asks, responding to Konami and then looking over to see Alan and the skattered paperwork, and Maria aiding the man to his feet. "It is usually me getting zapped, as a matter of fact." she comments, continuing to tug on what ever is between Edith's fingers, the air warping in Edith's palm-- Subtle, though observable if one is to watch closely enough as color seems to bleach from the world around Edith's point of contact.
A section of Alan's clothing catches fire.
"This is EXACTLY why I'm against teaching the students how to curse objects!" Maria yelps out to no one in particular upon seeing Alan's state, deciding to shield the man with her own body, in case he is struck again with another misfortune.
And there it goes, that nice new... well, newish looking tweed jacket has in fact caught fire. Alan tries to yelp, but his movements are still sluggish from the zap earlier.
"Oh dear." Edith notices it this time, stepping away to one side, though with focus fully on removing the curse solo, she makes it easier for Konami and or Maria to aid the man in dousing the flame.
Konami sighs as she looks around for something to try and help smother the fire on Alan's jacket, "Might be easier to put out the fire if you drop the jacket for a second?"
Maria was next to Alan, thus she focuses on dousing the flame instead. "Bloody hell." She murmurs under her breath, giving the man an empathetic stare as she attempts to take the jacket away, having nothing on her own hands that would help the man right away, might as well throw the clothing away and stomp on it until the fire gives way.
"Believe it or not," Edith responds to Maria, a steady pressure building around Edith's touch on the necklace, "I agree. This is why I take apprentices who show promice rather than generally approving of the stupidity that often happens in the Delta house. I am growing rather sick and tired of dealing with poor summoning circles, bad runework and inept rituals. There are classes for a reason, and curses are most certainly not on the teaching plan."
Alan nods in rapid agreement with Konami, laying his briefcase down as he prepares to disrobe. With Maria's help the matter is resolved as he's yanked out by the sleeves "That fortune teller..." he gasps "Was right on the money." he finishes as his jacket is smothered under foot.
"Hey now. There's not all that much stupidity going on in Tri Delta." Konami claims as she goes about trying to help Maria keep the flaming jacket from becoming a bigger fire hazard.
"I second that, poor summoning practices lead to injury and death, if you want to try and be spiteful witch, at least do it right." Maria hisses under her breath. With Konami's help however she does stop the jacket from burning down completely, it might be far from new, but at least it isn't complete ash either, means all is well - right?
Alan coughs, sputtering as he looks remorsefully at the singed, and now be-footprinted jacket "Well, college students will be college students, experimentation and all that rot." he says off-handedly, turning his attention warily to the necklace.
"This week alone I have had to break a binding circle, handle a poor ritual with a lot of blood in one of the girl's rooms and relocate a spirit." Edith counters, continuing to perform what ever working she's handling, the air veritably shaking under the pressure of something beyond arcana, but more primordial in sorcery.
Edith says "I am decursing an item some student left in the reception. You suspect -someone- sent my apprentice to you?"
Alan turns his attention to Edith from time to time, watching her handling of the artifact with a curiousity that wars with a wariness of the jewelry itself.
A section of Alan's clothing catches fire.
Alan shakes his head a bit as if to clear it looking to Maria "Ah, much belated thanks for your quick..." he yelps "That thing hates me!" he says as now his pants catch fire.
Konami shakes her head and says, "Some of these newer pledges clearly have their priorities in the wrong place totally. We're supposed to be worried about things like parties, sports and being popular. Not mucking around with spells and stuff. That's definately more Phi Beta stuff."
"Quit that at once." Edith tells the necklace, a palm wreathed in roiling dark energy slapping down atop it with a flash of contact. "Who ever caused this is going to suffer." she promices, eyes narrowing as she gives Alan an appologetic look.
No more 'kids will be kids' comments seem to be forthcoming from Alan this time as, with a slightly more pointed response, he stops and begins to roll on the floor, seemingly a little less eager to remove his trousers..
"Popularity is a scam." Edith bluntly tells Konami. "College popularity means nothing in the outside world. You work to fit in with a group who has you. You perform your duty to the best of your ability, you get payed, you live your life and you are successful. Seeking neon lights of fame and grandiosity is a blind that will see you burn out. You are here to learn. Parties are unimportant. Education is paramount." The energy around Edith's palm flares with an anti-light and there is a flash, then all is calm again, the curse broken.
Konami shakes her head as Alan has the bad luck to have more clothing set on fire. "Sometimes it seems like the object'll just pick out one person and keep going after them when it's having it's tantrums." frowning she adds, "Course, I've only ever seen it done twice, so not a huge amount of evidence for that."
Maria nods her head at Alan. "Oh yeah, don't worry about..." The trousers catch on fire, as she watches with a single sweat running down her face. "..that.." The girl looks around, and then - she finds what appears to be an arcane artifact, a fire extinguisher, a metaphorical lightbulb lits up above her head as she rushes over to grab it and spray it on the man's lower half of the body, in an attempt to stop the fire. "Hold on!"
With a final burst of power the curse on a golden necklace is broken.
