Illyanas Ghost Banishing 250102

In the ethereal twilight of Arkwright Cemetery, as a ghostly war erupts with clashing armies from beyond the grave, three women find themselves embroiled not just in a supernatural battle but also in a deeply personal conflict. Illyana's decision to stand back, suggesting Emmelline and Sae-byeok spearhead the banishing, sets off an intense series of personal revelations and accusations among them. Amidst the spectral onslaught—where elemental magic and spectral arms clash in a display that rips the veil between life and death—Sae-byeok's emotional turmoil bubbles to the surface, revealing her inner conflict regarding her feelings for Illyana and her own future. Emmelline, focused on her task, attempts to navigate her own feelings while constructing a powerful ritual, her concentration barely disturbed by the ongoing emotional revelations and the physical chaos surrounding them.

As the cemetery becomes a battlefield for both the ghostly entities and the unresolved tensions among the trio, Illyana and Sae-byeok engage in a heartfelt but tumultuous confrontation. Sae-byeok challenges Illyana's self-sacrificial stance on happiness and the notion of love, pushing towards the core of Illyana's fears and desires. Despite the palpable tension and the global threat that ghostly armies pose, the ritual edges closer to completion thanks to Emmelline's unwavering focus. It's clear that the night's events are a crucible for change, personal revelations, and perhaps a new understanding among the women. As they grapple with their own demons, both literal and metaphorical, the story underscores the complexity of human emotions and the lengths individuals will go to protect those they care about, even at the cost of their own happiness or conventional expectations. The conclusion, both in terms of the supernatural threat and the personal journeys of Illyana, Emmelline, and Sae-byeok, is a poignant reminder of the power of friendship, love, and the sacrifices one might make for both.
(Illyana's ghost banishing)

On the Sprawling Hillside of Arkwright Cemetery

It is dusk, about 17F(-8C) degrees, and there are a few dark grey stormclouds in the sky.

An eerie stillness settles over the graveyard, the fog thickening like an otherworldly veil. The ground trembles, and two ghostly armies surge forth, locked in a battle that defies time. One side, draped in ethereal armor, charges with spectral weapons, while the other hurls crackling bolts of elemental magic. The air is alight with haunting energy as the spirits, long dead, resume their eternal battle, heedless of the living who are caught in their spectral warpath.

Emmelline looks between Illyana and Sae-byeok. "um... did I disturb you two?," she asks curiously. Then the armies come forth and she sighs. "This thing again?," she says as she takes cover behind a convenient gravestone.

Watching the spirit armies manifest, Illyana sighs. "Oh I hate these guys. NOthing to really do." So saying, Illyana strides back to a grave marker, a hand gesturing to Sae-byeok and Emmelline for them to begin casting. "I'll leave this to you both."

Sae-byeok, looking like she just woke up, stares out with slumped shoulders as the worst banishment comes to undeath.

Two spectral generals lock eyes from across the battlefield as their armies collide in a chaotic whirlwind of steel and spell. One of them has a blade wreathed in fire; the other conjures a vertex of ice-cold magic around him - their collision sends a shockwave rippling through the graveyard that knocks everyone off their feet and cracks all nearby gravestones right in half.

Sae-byeok sets to her knees, barely paying attention to the scene beyond. She fiddles with the dirt half heartedly before following a trail up to a tombstone in front of her, riddled with something like bullets.

Sae-byeok sobers in a violent sense, gaining action if not a more intentful expression as she begins to make three circles around her with a nearby stick.

"Not really." Illyana tells Emmelline. "Sae's being weird because I joked she'd not sleep with me and thinks I could love Novel, which I just don't have the ability to do." To Sae-byeok, she points out, "There's more chance of me falling in love with Emma than Novel." Then the shockwave hits, Illyana paths to avoid it, clocks Sae-byeok solidly in the jaw, then finds a new seat on a tombstone.

Sae-byeok says "Stop please."
Sae-byeok stops chocking on her tongue enough to crawl to her elbow.

Emmelline sends off a quick text, before she flops down on the cold ground behind the gravestone. She takes out a wooden tablet from her duffle bag, small enough to be held in one hand. Carved into the tablet are various shapes, symbols and runes. She then takes out a vial of blood, along with a glass pipette. She draws some blood from the vial and begins carefully covering various parts of the tablet with blood. This is rather touchy work, as the tablet is small. If anyone weren't looking very closely, they might think she was making some weird art, though with a pipette rather than a paint brush. Then Illyana clocks Sae-byeok on the jaw and she looks on with concern. "Mate, careful!," she says, before returning to her concentrations. Only then does Illyana's words to her register. "Huh? What you two are a thing?," she asks curiously.

"Why.." Sae-byeok grunts.

"We're not a thing, no." Illyana tells Emmelline. "And why," she tells Sae-byeok, "Because I wanted. And you were being maudlin after I gave you a home and an identity."

A phalanx of ghostly knights charges forward, their spectral lances aimed at a line of mages, who summon a wall of fire in a desperate attempt to halt the advance. The resulting explosion sends waves of heat blasting throughout the graveyard, setting plants and clothing on fire.

Emmelline looks curiously between the two women, but decides not to take part in whatever disagreemen they seem to be having, and just goes back to concentrating on her work.

"No." Sae-byeok growls in a tone flexed with pain, stomping on the small circles she's made as she gets to her feet "I am not- WHATEVER that is!"

Sae-byeok drags the rune of eis through the air, the superheated space of flame catching her shirt immediately set to water's cold freezing point, snuffed with mist like smoke.

"I don't." Illyana agrees. "Because when I'm happy, something perpetually ruins it." The wave of heat hits, and once more, Illyana paths, this time in protection of Sae-byeok, the aura of a guardian angel stretching out so she takes the brunt of the heat, which Illyana ignores entirely, either not being bothered by it, or healing from it too quickly to manage. Checking that Emmelline is fine, she then returns to her casual seat on a grave marker. "Where was I? Oh right. Maudlin is glum. Sad, depressive. And I'm not allowed to be happy. There's only one person in this town who truly makes me happy and I see her rarely. The others are passing or lingering amusements, or entertainment value, or just friends. Friends who are owned by other people, and thus arn't mine. So how could I be happy?"

Emmelline looks rather sadly over at Illyana as she speaks her piece to Sae-byeok, but she chooses to continues to stay out of it. She continues drawing b lood from the vial through the glass pipette, and carefully covering parts of her tablet in blood, and avoiding others. To be fair, this does take a good amount of focus, but it's clear she's listening, even if she isn't commenting. Which is unsurprising, given they're in the same cemetery together.

A ghostly battlemage hurls a ball of fire, deflected mid-air by a phantom knight's shield, causing an explosion that sends searing heat and blinding light across the battlefield.

"MAYBE-" Sae-byeok starts, sarcastically lifting her arms in a tone that can't manage calm, "older, wiser Sae-byeok is smart enough to know when her juniors who have experience too much, who she loves VERY much will be happier together than with her!"

"I can be happy with the child!" Sae-byeok pats her stomach insistently, snarling, "I am sad that the father cannot love me but so what? Not about me being 'mod lynn,' it is about you crating arbitrary lines in your teenage years and declaring you will NEVER BE HAPPY!"

"The fact of the matter is," Illyana finishes to Sae-byeok, "I sacrificed my happyness to protect people around me. That's worthwhile to me. I'm the monster so you or Novel, or Ivy, or Emma, Brian, Harry etceter don't need to."

"You are too young! TOO YOUNG!" Sae-byeok cries with the vented frustration of an asian grandma, pacing in a short circle while fire erupts over her shoulder.

"HOld on, let me deal with the fireball." Illyana pauses to do just that, letting Sae-byeok cast her circles and Emmelline work her tablet. There's a two handed explosion of flame, light, gravitic pushback and Illyana's fingers release an inferno of flame that bursts against the flame and light coming from the mage's fireball, the two forces canstling each other. "Anyway, as I was saying, I've made a choice to protect people who deserve it. I'm content in the fact I could do that for humanity. Because humanity deserves a protector."

"What does THAT have to do with Novel and me!?" Sae-byeok screams.

Sae-byeok says "Fuck humanity! It is no about them! No one is PRO-TEC-TING humanity! They follow Gods that eat them!"
"It keeps you human." Illyana explains to Sae-byeok.

A pained look flashes across Emmelline's countenance as Sae-byeok mentions Brian's name, but again she doesn't speak to it. She just sighs as the woman gives her monologue, and as Illyana replies to said monologue. She clearly keeping out of it. though as Sae-byeok screams, she shakes her head. "Can we not please?," she asks, in her by comparison much softer voice. "Please, you're right next to my ear. Or if you need to scream, can we scream after this thing is over? thank you."

Sae-byeok says "Do not dress up noble you hurting yourself!"
Sae-byeok shunts a pair of earplugs in Emmelline's lap.

A ghostly battlemage hurls a ball of fire, deflected mid-air by a phantom knight's shield, causing an explosion that sends searing heat and blinding light across the battlefield.

Sae-byeok says "Not every sacrifice of yourself is going to make others happy! Sometimes you just get use to paying the price!"
As Sae-byeok shunts the ear plugs Emmelline's way, it jostles her, nearly causing her to drop blood on the wrong place on the tablet. She makes a face, a flash of anger on her countenance, but she doesn't speak. She just sighs, and continues her work.

"I hurt myself the moment I let myself get drawn into the Scions." Illyana shrugs. "That continued in the Hand. It continued when I was Fayad and Emmanuel's war dog in the Disruptors--" Cutting herself off, Illyana fires another gout of fire to disrupt the mage's own fireball as Sae-byeok and Emmelline continue the actual work. She's calm, solemn by all accounts, and her voice never raises. "People like Emmelline get to be the actual heros. The Order protects people. And no, because you or Novel or Emmelline here don't need to feed to survive. I am very literally parasitic. But so are others-- Less nice monsters. And you denying the sacrifice I made is just as bad as not accepting your own flaws, or saying that humanity don't deserve to survive, because I love humanity. I hurt when I feed from them, but I do it anyway. Because I can save them and guide them. It makes me happy that other people can live obliviously without being hurt because I'm here to stop the Sapphire Martyrs, or the Golden Shadow or the Destined Hoast."

A towering, spectral knight swings his sword at a ghostly conjurer, cutting the arcanist in half and continuing onwards to collide against a gravestone. The collision smashes the gravestone apart, sending shards flying all around dangerously.

Emmelline finishes doing her bloody paint work on the tablet, and puts away the now empty vial and the glass pipette. She begins looking very intently at the table,t clearly focusing her mental energies upon it. This causes the tablet to glow just slightly Weak and intermittent at first, but it grows stronger with each passing moment. She still continues her silence, refusing to take part in whatever argument she might have alnded herself in with Illyana and Sae-byeok.

"There's no red herring." Illyana tells Sae-byeok. "I'll be happy when I can afford for that to happen. But it's the most fundamental human quality that drives me; Love. I want love like we all do. But I am waiting until it happens. Because looking for it is foolish and wrong."

Sae-byeok says "You want love then let PEOPLE LOVE YOU! "
Sae-byeok thanks Sheryl Crow.

Sae-byeok, to be clear, has done jack all for any of this.

The air thickens with an unnatural fog as ghostly archers let loose a volley of arrows. The projectiles are swept away by a whirlwind conjured by spectral windcallers, and the gust of wind sends everyone alive flying against tombstones with bone-jarring force.

Emmelline just has a long suffering look on her face, as Illyana and Sae-byeok's argument continues. Looking very much like she'd rather be elsewhere at the moment. Instead however, she just sighs, and turns the tablet face outwards towards the ghost, and the glow is now quite strong and regular, it having the desired effect on the ghosts. "Why do i show up to these things, and I end up the only one actually doing anything about these bloody things?," she ponders more to herself than to the bickering women.

jerks a finger at Emmelline, taking out a multitool, "And YOU! Hedge mage! Someone else that does not understand sacrifice! YOU ARE A RITUALIST, and yet you SACRIFICE the function of your craft because you think it is convenient? THE ARCANE CANNOT LOCATE YOU UNLESS THE SIGIL IS STILL!"

"This-" Sae-byeok says as she digs a blade down her arm, "Is the RESULT of sacrifice. THIS is the reward of stupidity!"

"I'm scared to let people love me because I always get hurt." Illyana sighs. "But I also cant be happy with Novel-- That's really why you're upset." There's a grin then as Sae-byeok says what she says. "I was wrong. I don't deny it. But I'm also not a child. I made my bed and I accept I need to lay in it. And if you do love me like family should, you also need to accept that I accept it." The gust sends everyone flying, but Illyana's power set means that Illyana controls gravity, and controlling gravity is what Illyana does. Her own weight lightens, and as soon as she's shoved, she's back up. Sae-byeok and Emmelline will have to deal with themselves for this one. Though the ritual is nearing its conclusion if the shine on Emmelline's tablet and Sae-byeok's circle is anything to go bye. "Likely because you've oblivious to Sae's ritual circle or the fact that I have literally been body guarding you so you don't get insinerated." Illyana sniffs. "But tell you what, next time, when pirate ghosts shoot you, or fireballs fly at you, or demons attack you, I can let them."
