Syls Decursing Attempt 241008

(Syl's decursing attempt)

[Mon Oct 7 2024]

On Paine Avenue the Main Artery of the North Side

It is night, about 43F(6C) degrees, and there are a few dark grey stormclouds in the sky. There is a waxing crescent moon.

Syl says "Found a cursed dagger."
Syl says "I'm at the apartments. Not the official street, but where you go if you're just trying to get there visually based off landmarks."
Syl says "Alright. Heading in."
Syl says "Which apartment are we meeting at?"
Bear peers at Syl, giving her a long once-over.

Ash smiles to Syl, giving a welcoming and beckoning wave, before frowning and dropping a glare at Bear. "I asked you several times now, where do we drop your shit at?"

Ash says "You still haven't answered me. And stop ogling my intern! Especially when I'm in a dress this cute!"
Ash moves to the ritual circle, then drawls to Syl, "You can begin the decursing, and we can chat while we do that."

Bear winces, "Decursing? Hopefully she's better at this than you, Ash."

Syl tells Bear, "Not really, its more of a nickname that my parents thought should be a name: Syl. It was short - for others, for an actual name, Sylvia, but for me its just my full name. I got cheat of at least three letters. What about you? What's your name?"

Bear says "Syl, huh? Good to meetcha'. Like the short names, easier to remember. Name's Bear. No, its not my legal. Just, its what everyone calls me."
Bear grins wryly as Ash pinches him.

Ash drawls to Bear, after pinching him, "I'm an expert! Try this yourself, then get blown up with freezing fire, watch!" They don't seem particularly irritable - except when they repeat their line of questioning - more teasing Bear fondly as he teases them.

Bear sighs softly, peering about, already on guard as he twirls his hammer idly.

Bear says "Hopefully this goes better than last time."
Syl tries to avoid touching a silver dagger as she presents it to Ash and someone, holding it gingerly and with the cloth of her clothing between her and the blade so she doesn't have to touch the hilt. "Should I set it down somewhere or just hold it? Never done this before."

Syl tries to avoid touching a silver dagger as she presents it to Ash and Bear, holding it gingerly and with the cloth of her clothing between her and the blade so she doesn't have to touch the hilt. "Should I set it down somewhere or just hold it? Never done this before."

Ash smirks to Syl, drawling, "It'll decide for you - such is the nature of these unstable curses." Which suggests that there are stable curses... of curse. Ash starts by summoning a spectral cadre of will o' the wisps, further lighting the room beyond candlelight with their ethereal, pastel pale presence. They beckon the light to them, where it begins to merge with their form, setting them slowly aglow. To Bear, they drawl, "It went fantastic last time, it was just... not an ideal group. The curse is going to lash out *regardless*, like any trapped animal trying to escape its demise. And yeah, set it down in the middle of the circle, Syl."

Growing air pressure makes your ear's pop uncomfortably and deadens all sound.
Syl moves to the middle of the circle as instructed by Ash to set down the cursed silver dagger. She seems to take heart in Ash's confidence rather rather than taking Bear's words to heart and visible looks to him for cues on how she should be feeling about how things are going. One might get the impression that whether she is confident is going to depend on whether Ash is.

Bear chuckles softly, "Sorry you picked two hands of dumb muscle instead of occultists then. Still, I'll at least keep your skinny ass on your feet. Or at least not splattered against the wall if its starts throwing us aga-" he quiets as the room does, peering about warily. His grip on his hammer tightens.

Syl sets down the dagger in the circle being careful not to break it and then moves away from the circle.

reaches up a hand to her nose, not quite casually, and pinches it. She blows against it, as if to re-establish pressure in her ears. "Hate that feeling. Its like when you go swimming in a really deep pool." Syl shakes her head and looks to Ash and Bear. "The daggers doing that?" Obviously it must be. She looks at it with cold blue eyes, like hating it would do something to fix the problem with the room's pressure.

All metal objects in the room are suddenly tugged violently towards the artifact.
Bear shrugs lightly, the man clearly not having much clue about magic, despite people's insistence he be dragged along to witness it. Suddenly, his grip on his hammer is violently tested, and the large man finds himself bracing against the floor, using his weight to try and keep his hammer from being dragged into the mass at the center, "S-shit! The hell is..."

Ash mouths some words as they begin to perform their magic. The existing binding circle makes it so much easier, after Syl places down the dagger, so that Ash's movements almost immediately form a connection to the dagger. It starts with finger tutting, smaller movements to form geometric shapes, and follow similarly geometric patterns, drawing in the air sigils that strengthen that connection.

Syl sees Ash fully confident and composed. As they pop their ears back, their words are more easily heard as they drawl, "No, you're fine, Bear. I needed your energies more than magic, I'm otherwise good enough to do this by my-" and then they're pulled forward by their piercings, smashing their face up against an invisible wall around the magic circle. They grunt, in pain, and wait for the pull to let go before stepping back. They don't look surprised, just annoyed and in pain.

Syl is caught completely off guard as she is pulled toward the object by buttons and things within her pockets. She manages to get her feet pushed out ahead of her to stop herself from stumbling toward the dagger.

Syl can't quite keep a grin from blossoming on her face as she sees Ash's annoyed look as he is slammed into the invisible wall and steps back from it once it fades. Its not really the sort of look an intern should be giving their boss. Entirely too happy with his misfortune, for sure.

Bear grimaces, and releases his hammer, letting it surge with a loud crash into the pile of items near the artifact. Two large, meaty hands whip out, and with strength beyond normal humans, secures Syl and Ash as he seizes them each by the forearm, "I gotcha'! Just focus on your magic stuff!"

Ash grumbles, "The unstable curses usually use Gate magic instead of more stable blood magic. It's quicker and easier for their purposes, but it means that, when the time runs out and the item grows unstable, it lashes out with he elements. We've had air, then force. I've been trying to research out an order, but I've started paying attention a bit too late." They nerd out a bit as their movement grows, and they tell Bear, gently, "Let me go, I need to dance. Just watch out for Syl? Thank you, though."

For several seconds the room grows painfully hot.
Bear releases that grip on Ash's command, "My bad, I-" He grit his teeth and hisses in pain as that heat stings him, "Fuckin'... microwavin' us..."

cringes as the pain of the heat swells through her, but even as it does she finds her grin growing wider, perhaps bouyed by the pain that Bear is feeling or encouraged by Ash. "Hot," Syl complains.

Bear glances aside at Syl after that wave of heat passes, noting the look on Syl's face, "Your friend kinda' creeps me out, Ash, not gonna' lie." He doesn't linger on her long, though, focusing his attention towards the dagger in the center.

A section of Ash's clothing catches fire.

Ash notes quietly, "Air, force, fire...." as they start their dance again properly. Now, they're moving their arms, making shapes and swirls in the air with almost machine-like precision, leaving trails of light and magic in the air. Unlike the painful tug or the air popping, this heat does absolutely nothing to them, and they start to pass the movement down to their hips as they move their feet next, their body taking a belly-dancing rhythm to their magic.

To Syl, they drawl, "Pay attention. To the dagger, and how I'm affecting the energy. It's like a sparking wire, right? And I'm pulling it all together, as if taping it in place, or twining it around. Another way is to apply elemental power to the dagger in response to what it gives. You can used devices meant to interface with magic for the former, using waves and electricity... I'm no expert on that."

"But the latter can be as simple as the Fifth Element. I've also seen people use force of will to interact with the curse like a person... another treated it as if it was embodied by an angry spirit, palacating it. This all works. So, no magic - fuck, more fire? There goes that fucking theory! Bear, pat me out!"

Bear blinks, hesistating just a moment. The seconds, he's surging towards Ash, releasing Syl and grabbing hold of that clothing. "Oww, oww, fuck, fuck, fuuuuuuuck!" He pats of the clothing as best he can, meaty hands pawing at the fabric and his tanned skin reddens from mild burns.

really does try to follow along with Ash's instruction like a devoted and eager intern intent on learning. She tries. Yet that grin is still there and she seems to be struggling to suppress giggles as things get more and more painful. She's clearly in a very good mood amid the chaos. "Fifth element, devices to interfere with magic," Syl offers, nodding along happily and looking at the dagger as Ash told her to, like its a treat, rather than a threat. "I'm listening."

Ash quickens their pace, their body twisting and turning, dipping and diving, arms swinging wide and, yet, in perfect symphony. They allow Bear to do the work as he pats out their flames, not letting it stop them though it *clearly* burns their skin, as well.

Bear doesn't seem certain if just tearing off those burning sections of clothing will interrupt the dance, or the ritual. As such, he simply opts to fumble after the graceful dancer, grimacing as he tries his best to keep the burning cloth from spreading too much, peeling it more into his own hands than Ash's skin.

With a final burst of power the curse on a silver dagger is broken.
